The Republican National Convention (RNC) is set to take place in Milwaukee on Monday, July 15. Massive numbers of law enforcement officers are conducting tight surveillance in an area of about half a square mile around the convention venue.
On July 13 (last Saturday), former President Trump was shot and injured during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, leading to the official bolstering of security measures.
The event venue has been encircled by tall black fences. Attendees must take a roundabout route to reach the entrance and access the event site – the Fiserv Forum, where the activities will be held and continue until Thursday, July 18.
A police patrol boat is navigating the Milwaukee River, while dozens of mounted police officers are patrolling the surrounding streets. Many police cars have cordoned off roads and parking lots.
Drivers entering the secure area are required to open their trunks and hoods for inspection, with two police dogs conducting sweeps around each vehicle.
Furthermore, police officers are directing pedestrians to safety tents, where personal identification of each entrant is checked, and all items in bags are inspected. Journalists must power on their phones, laptops, and other electronic devices before entering.
The event is limited to Republican delegates, party officials, invited guests, and journalists.
Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh announced at a press conference held on Monday that approximately 1,700 National Guard members and a small number of active-duty personnel will be providing round-the-clock support to the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and Milwaukee Police Department during the convention.
Singh stated, “These personnel are primarily from the National Guard units in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota, and they will provide civil support… and security services, as well as be prepared to respond to other domestic emergencies to protect lives and property, maintain peace, order, and public safety.”
