Parents queue early for primary one school allocation.

The 2024 unified primary one admission results were announced yesterday. The Education Bureau stated that the total number of children allocated to their top three school choices during the self-allocating and unified admission phases combined resulted in an overall satisfaction rate of 92.2%. In a primary school in Yau Ma Tei, parents lined up early yesterday morning to apply for waitlist spots for their children.

Ms. Chan Yuen-hing, Vice Principal of Yau Ma Tei Catholic Primary School (Hoi Wang Road), mentioned that the school will be implementing small-class teaching with 25 students per class starting the new school year. Taking into account retention spots, they anticipate having up to 10 waitlist spots. She also noted that this year is expected to have 400 to 500 families “knocking on the door,” similar to previous years.

Explaining the increase in overall satisfaction rate for allocation to top three choices, Ms. Chan attributed it to structural issues resulting in a decrease in the overall number of students admitted. However, she views it as an opportune time to implement small-class education.

Some parents who came to “knock on the door” expressed concerns that their children did not receive their third choice, and since the school is conveniently located and considered prestigious, they decided to visit in person. They also expressed worries that a reduction in waitlist spots might intensify competition, prompting them to consider visiting one or two more schools for waitlist opportunities.

Other parents mentioned that the school has a good reputation and is close to their residence, making it their primary target. They emphasized that they would only visit this particular school as they are concerned about the pressure it might put on their children.

The Education Bureau previously announced that a total of 19,204 children participated in the unified primary one admission this year, with 16,083 children being allocated to their top three school choices. Taking into account the total number of children allocated to their top three choices during the self-allocation and unified admission phases, the overall satisfaction rate stands at 92.2%.

The Education Bureau reminded parents to complete the registration process at the allocated school during the school’s office hours from June 11th to 13th (Tuesday to Thursday). If unable to register on these dates due to extenuating circumstances, parents should contact the registration personnel at the allocated school in advance; otherwise, it will be deemed as forfeiting the allocated spot.
