Los Angeles County Alhambra police announced that they uncovered hundreds of pounds of methamphetamine from an Airbnb rental property in the city.
Last Sunday, the Alhambra Police Department posted on social media that over 200 pounds of methamphetamine were discovered by a cleaning staff in an Airbnb rental in the city, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
According to FOX11, officers were called to a residence on Ethel Avenue in the 1400 block where they found 235 pounds of methamphetamine. Investigators noted that they were initially called to the scene because the cleaning staff found several suspicious items in the Airbnb residence.
Police stated that surveillance footage showed the suspects transporting drugs in a U-Haul truck. When they returned to the residence and saw many police cars in front, they attempted to flee by turning around.
The two individuals were eventually captured by police, detained for suspicion of drug trafficking, and charged. The identities of the suspects have not been confirmed at this time.
Police released a photo showing packages of methamphetamine lined up on the ground.
In a statement to FOX 11, an Airbnb spokesperson expressed, “Criminal activity reported on Airbnb is absolutely not allowed, as the investigation continues, we have removed a booking customer from the platform. Our team is working closely with the landlord to provide support and are ready to assist the Alhambra Police Department in their investigation.”
Airbnb also reiterated its commitment to safety, emphasizing the “AirCover for Hosts” program which provides comprehensive protection for hosts, automatically included in bookings for free. Their 24-hour safety hotline is available for hosts and guests to quickly reach out to professional security teams for assistance. Additionally, Airbnb’s terms of service and payment service terms clearly prohibit any criminal activities on the platform. In cases of such behavior, potential measures include removing users from the platform.
Currently, there are no further details publicly available regarding the case.
