As the holiday season unfolds in full swing, the New York City Police Department is reminding residents to be cautious when shopping online, especially through platforms like Craigslist, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace.
On some second-hand trading platforms, transactions typically involve online communication between the parties, culminating in face-to-face meetings to complete the exchange. However, during these transactions, criminals often see it as an opportunity to carry out “zero-dollar purchases” and violent robberies, resulting in a rise in related incidents.
In order to help ensure the safety of both buyers and sellers, the police are encouraging people to exchange goods within the “NYPD E-Commerce Exchange Zone” in New York City.
The designated areas are located outside each public New York City police facility, usually near the front entrance. These exchange zones are well-lit and monitored 24 hours a day.
New York City is home to 77 police precincts. To find the address of your local precinct, please visit the link provided by the New York City Police Department (https://tinyurl.com/yte8xp8b) and enter your address.
This initiative aims to provide a safer environment for online transactions, giving residents peace of mind while engaging in buying and selling activities during the bustling holiday season. Remember to always prioritize safety and take necessary precautions when conducting any online transactions.
