“Keeping promises is one of the most valued qualities when it comes to making friends and finding a partner. Donna Morris, Chief Human Resources Officer at Walmart, with responsibility for 2.1 million employees and serving as a Vice President of the company, also looks for this quality in her employees. The 57-year-old executive believes that being able to deliver on promises is the most evident good quality in an employee.
According to a report published by CNBC’s ‘Make It’ segment on Monday, Morris stated, ‘They can deliver what you expect when you expect it.’ She believes that the best employees often complete tasks ahead of schedule, stating, ‘So I always say, early is better than late, and more is always better than less.’
Morris emphasized that integrity and trustworthiness are among the most important qualities she looks for when hiring employees, as managers want employees who not only get the job done but are also willing to go above and beyond in the workplace. Leadership expert and author Scott Mautz pointed out in another article on CNBC’s ‘Make It’ segment that these qualities also help in elevating one’s status and gaining respect among colleagues.
In addition to reliability, Morris also appreciates employees who are willing to take on new challenges. ‘They raise their hands, are willing to take on more, and don’t make excuses,’ she said. ‘Those who are willing to say ‘I can try’ even when they have a lot on their plate definitely possess this quality.’
It is worth noting that taking on tasks beyond one’s abilities can backfire. LinkedIn career expert Drew McCaskill warned that this can seriously harm mental health and work efficiency, and one should only take on tasks that they truly have time for.
‘Don’t expect to earn extra points by working harder,’ he said. ‘When work keeps you up at night, causes anxiety, or makes you feel overwhelmed, speak up.’
Morris also emphasized that overcommitting and not being able to deliver can weaken trust with your supervisor, especially if you are always emphasizing reasons why you can’t fulfill your commitments.”
