Old injury resurfaces: Quan Hongchan withdraws from National Diving Championships

Chinese diver Quan Hongchan has withdrawn from the 2025 National Diving Championships due to a recurring old injury. The news of her withdrawal made it to the hot search topics on Weibo on May 21st.

The 2025 National Diving Championships and the selections for the World Championships and the National Games qualifier will be held from May 24th to 30th at the Wuhan Sports Center Swimming Pool.

According to reports from “Beiqing Sports,” on May 20th, the Guangdong Diving Team roster for the 2025 National Diving Championships issued by the Ersha Sports Training Center in Guangdong included Olympic champions Xie Sicheng, Chen Aisen, and female 3m springboard gold medalist at the Paris Olympics, Chen Yiwen. However, Quan Hongchan’s name was noticeably absent from the list.

It was reported that Quan Hongchan had arrived in Wuhan with the Guangdong team but had to withdraw from the competition due to a recurring old injury.

Despite not participating in this competition, reports suggest that as a two-time Olympic champion, Quan Hongchan should have a place in the lineup for the World Championships and the National Games in the women’s platform diving event.

Born in 2007, Quan Hongchan turned 18 this year. Since her debut in 2017, she quickly became a focal point of public attention for her exceptional diving skills. However, she is currently facing challenges due to her development.

Since the Paris Olympics last year, her height has increased from 1.55m to 1.60m, a significant 5cm growth. For a diver, this growth means that she needs to readjust her strength, coordination, and movements.

As a result, Quan Hongchan has lost to her teammate Chen Yuxi three times in a row, settling for silver medals. She candidly admitted, “I can’t find the feeling I had before. With the increase in weight, my movements also become distorted, and the outcome was expected.”

In a previous interview with the media, she mentioned, “After the Paris Olympics, I had more public appearances, so I rarely focused on training.” She expressed her desire for a space of her own multiple times.
