Hello audience, welcome to “Qin Peng Observation”.

Today’s focus: The US presidential election candidate list is finalized, is this really the best gift the Democratic Party has given to Trump? It’s not that simple! The new partnership of Harris and Walz has brought forth 4 things that are causing headaches.

Chinese netizens envy Bangladesh overthrowing the dictator, what are their success factors? The tension in Zhongnanhai is high as China has its own civil servant quota system.

The US presidential election has entered a crucial moment. This week, current Vice President Harris secured the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee position with a 99% party delegate vote. On Tuesday, Harris officially selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for Vice President.

News emerged that some people cheered this as the best gift Harris could give to Trump, as they selected an extremely left-wing governor to represent them.

At first glance, it may seem that way, as the founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, wrote:

“Welcome to the race, Tim Walz! Let’s make sure America knows who you are.

“You helped ignite the George Floyd riots, the most severe riots America has seen in decades. When the city of Minneapolis was engulfed in flames, you failed to deploy the National Guard all day, blaming the city for not submitting the proper paperwork. You allowed your daughter to leak the National Guard’s deployment plans online, giving rioters free rein to loot the city for how long. Because of you, Minneapolis became a war zone.

“A few days after Donald Trump’s assassination attempt, you referred to him and his supporters as ‘fascists’, inciting similar rhetoric that led to his assassination. You oversaw some of the most radical teen transgender surgeries in America. Under your leadership, children as young as their early teens can have their breasts removed and undergo sterilization, all labeled as ‘healthcare’ by your government.

“You have the most extreme abortion laws in America. No restrictions. 5 to 6 babies are born alive each year, only to be murdered under the laws you support.

“On immigration, you’ve said you want to provide a ‘ladder’ for invaders to climb over Trump’s wall. You are a radical open borders fanatic.”

Some also shared videos of Walz praising socialism, saying “Embracing socialism for one person is being friendly to another”.

If we only look at these, undoubtedly the Democratic Party has made a wrong move. However, I still want to remind everyone that in analyzing the US election, personal preferences should be set aside, and we should look at it from the perspective of American voters to be more objective.

According to reports from American media, in the final hours on Sunday, Harris was keen on two individuals: Walz and Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro, and said she wanted to see their chemistry, ultimately choosing Walz.

What are the reasons behind this decision? Shapiro is the governor of a key swing state, Pennsylvania, but his Jewish identity was not liked by some who support Palestine, and he is not favored by the UAW, the automotive industry union in the US. Sources revealed that Democratic Party bigwig Pelosi supported Walz because he had been reelected to the House of Representatives for 6 terms.

But I believe this is only superficial. Considering a candidate is certainly helpful in winning the final election, the substantial reason is: Walz has some unique qualities that would attract more voters, even appealing to Trump’s base of rural white people and veterans.

American media believes Walz has several advantages:

For the Democratic Party to win the White House, they absolutely cannot afford to lose the ‘Blue Wall’ in the Midwest, including states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. By holding on to this wall, even if Trump wins other swing states like Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada, Harris still has a chance to win the election. With Shapiro in Pennsylvania, the other two states become crucial.

As a two-term governor and current chair of the Democratic Governors Association, Walz is well-known in western Wisconsin as the state shares a media market with Minnesota, and Michigan has some economic and cultural similarities with the state he currently governs.

Walz gives off the vibe of a kind-hearted Midwesterner, a former high school teacher, and a successful high school American football coach, which makes him quite popular and favorable for face-to-face interactions with voters, especially in the ‘Rust Belt’.

Some netizens commented, “He can choose to be vice president or wash cars.” Walz often appears in T-shirts, with a friendly neighborhood uncle-like smile, humorous speaking style, which makes it difficult for people to be on guard. As a social media user put it, he has a “halo of an ordinary person”.

An insider stated that Walz was chosen because he has rich executive experience and a track record in addressing nationally important issues that the Democratic Party cares about, such as child tax credits, paid leave, abortion, and gun control. This would be appealing to progressives and some young people.

In the late 1990s, he advocated for LGBTQ rights earlier than most members of the Democratic Party.

Trump’s campaign team stated in a press release that this choice signifies a doubling down on progressivism. “San Francisco liberal Kamala Harris naturally chose Tim Walz, a partner with a shared vision for the West Coast. Walz, during his time as governor, has sought to reshape Minnesota according to the image of California.”

During the 2018 gubernatorial elections, some Minnesotans viewed him as a moderate Democrat. However, during his governorship, he turned out to be more left-wing than some initially expected. He supports universal free school meals, the restoration of voting rights for former inmates, driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants, and the legalization of marijuana. He also signed a law making abortion a ‘fundamental right’.

He is adept at adaptation. In a society highly concerned about gun issues, Walz owns guns and is a hunter. He previously received support and political donations from the National Rifle Association (NRA). This gives the impression that he is not radical. However, following the large-scale shooting in Las Vegas in 2017, he donated the NRA contributions to charity. The following year, after a school shooting in Florida, Walz voiced support for gun control. Once in office as governor, he signed gun control legislation.

Trump’s iconic voter image consists of rural white Americans, veterans, and police officers. Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years, reaching the rank of Command Sergeant Major, which is the highest rank an enlisted Army National Guard member can achieve.

This characteristic may attract Republican supporters with a military background, who would recognize the rarity of his rank. This notably surpasses the military rank of the Republican vice presidential candidate, Vance, who served in the Marine Corps and rose to the rank of Sergeant.

However, Walz retired as a Command Sergeant Major because he did not complete the course at the US Army Sergeant Major Academy. He might face political attacks due to this.

In a fundraising text sent to supporters on Tuesday, Harris described Walz as a “seasoned leader with field experience”.

Before being shortlisted as a vice presidential candidate, Walz was relatively unknown outside of Minnesota. He gained popularity recently when he criticized Trump and Vance in a TV interview a few weeks ago, calling the two “weird,” a term widely used in the Democratic Party.

Compared to Walz’s eloquence, Vance is younger, and has recently made frequent verbal gaffes. Of course, I previously mentioned the advantages of Trump and Vance, and will not repeat them here. I believe both sides will face a tough battle ahead.

According to Rutgers University data, about one-third of past vice-presidents have served as governors. Who will ultimately win the 2024 US election? Let’s keep an eye on it.

This week, a piece of news has particularly excited the Chinese people. After continuous protests by the Bangladeshi people, Prime Minister Hasina finally announced her resignation and fled abroad. The people of Bangladesh achieved victory.

Excited crowds stormed her palace, emptying various items, reminiscent of a scene from Jiang Wen’s famous movie “Let the Bullets Fly.”

The protests, initially triggered by a large number of unemployed and frustrated students, started as a protest against the official civil service quota system and Hasina’s dictatorship, eventually evolving into a nationwide movement. Hence, the Chinese people see this as a version of the 8964 movement in Bangladesh.

What particularly pleased the Chinese people was when Bangladeshi protesters used an excavator to demolish a statue of ‘National Father’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He is also the father of former Prime Minister Hasina.

One Chinese netizen said, “If the CPC does not reflect on themselves, this day will come sooner or later. When those in power think their power is boundless, they are unaware of the simmering anger in the hearts of the people. The heads of dictators will eventually be crushed by the excavator of history.” Another asked, “Will the borrowed money be paid back? On July 10, Xi Jinping met with Hasina in Beijing, announcing the establishment of a strategic partnership between the two countries. They signed 20 cooperation agreements, including a $5 billion loan from China.”

Why did the people of Bangladesh win? I believe it can be summed up in three phrases: 1. with nationwide resistance, 2. fearlessness of death, 3. crucial military support in the moment of need.

A video circulating on Chinese social media shows a Bangladeshi female university student protesting on the streets, telling a reporter, “I told my father if I die tragically on the streets today, no one should be sad about it. When my classmates celebrate victory, please announce it as my victory. Bury me when we achieve the final victory. These words are heartfelt, as for what happens next, we’ll see.”

The ongoing protests, crackdowns, and resistance led to approximately 300 deaths, thousands injured, and over ten thousand arrests.

When Hasina demanded the military to crack down, the military refused. Furthermore, according to India’s NDTV on August 5th quoting sources, the military gave Hasina an ultimatum, demanding her resignation and exile within 45 minutes.

Many feared that Bangladesh would turn into a military government, however, on August 6th, Bangladeshi President Chup announced that Nobel Peace Prize laureate Yunus would lead an interim government.

Yunus, 84 years old, is one of the country’s most outstanding figures. He is the founder of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, renowned for providing small loans to the poor with no collateral, helping millions of people escape poverty. During Hasina’s reign, Yunus faced several corruption charges. Supporters believe Hasina viewed him as a potential rival and sought political revenge against him.

Countries around the world have expressed concern and support for this change, and I predict that Bangladesh will transition peacefully.

On a deeper level, the significant change in Bangladesh stems from prolonged authoritarian rule disconnecting from the people, high unemployment, and corruption issues. The triggering point was the massive government job quota system that reserved over half of civil servant positions for specific groups, including allocating 30% of public roles to the families of veterans from the 1971 anti-Pakistan war.

These issues are prevalent in China as well. Red and second/third-generation officials, as well as white-gloved individuals, are widespread. It’s not uncommon to see multigenerational inheritance of public safety, taxation, and state-owned enterprises. The recent exposure of Ma Xiangyu in Suzhou’s Industry and Commerce Bureau has many people lamenting that it is a typical ‘county-level brahmin’ incident. Ma Xiangyu scored nearly 700 points in the gaokao, graduated from Tsinghua University, but could only serve as a department head; while Wan Nian County Secretary Mao Qi, with a score over 300 in gaokao, became a department-level official at the young age of 32, and none of the county leaders graduated from a prestigious university!

Therefore, after Hasina’s escape, the CCP’s official media dared to report it quietly, not trending on social media, with Weibo filtering out key terms. Phoenix Net’s article “Bangladesh Prime Minister: Prime Minister, You Have 45 Minutes to Leave” was deleted. All this indicates that the transition in Bangladesh has triggered the CCP’s sensitive nerves.

However, can the CCP block the voices of countless people? Can it address the increasingly severe problems, including economic decline and unemployment? An erupting volcano is just a matter of time.

For every Chinese person, understanding the evil of the CCP, exiting the CCP before its complete collapse, and avoiding being buried with it, is crucial. What do you think?
