Recently, the Beiluo River basin in Shaanxi Province has been hit by unprecedented flooding. According to the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources, from August 6th to 9th, the cumulative rainfall in the Beiluo River basin in Shaanxi Province reached 90 millimeters, with the highest point rainfall in Zhidan, Yan’an at 224 millimeters. Due to the impact of the rainfall, the Beiluo River is experiencing its largest flood since 1994. Water levels are rising rapidly, and the flow rate is astonishing, prompting urgent concerns based on historical records.
The surging floodwaters are posing a severe challenge to the downstream of the Beiluo River. According to the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources, as of 12:45 on the 10th, the peak water level at the Zhangtou Hydrological Station in the downstream main stream (Weinan, Shaanxi) reached 371.71 meters, with a corresponding flow rate of 3530 cubic meters per second, exceeding the guaranteed flow rate (3300 cubic meters per second). This is the third highest peak since records began in 1933 (the historical maximum flow rate was 6280 cubic meters per second in September 1994). By 21:00, the flow rate had dropped to 1190 cubic meters per second, and the floodwaters are progressing downstream. It is expected that flooding above the warning flow rate will occur in the downstream of the Beiluo River.
