North American Early Summer Box Office Drops 65% Compared to Last Year, Old Movies Staying Stuck in Rankings

As of Sunday, despite “Garfield: Farm Adventure” taking the number one spot at the North American weekend box office, the early summer box office performance has been poor, with a 65% drop compared to the same period in 2023. This decline is attributed to the impact of last year’s strike by the American actors and writers guild, leading to a shortage of films this year. Old movies such as “Interplay of Illusions” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Birth of a Kingdom” continue to linger on the charts.

According to Box Office Mojo data, “Garfield: Farm Adventure” grossed $14 million in its second weekend in North America, securing the top spot at the North American weekend box office. This marked a 42% drop from its opening weekend. The total North American revenue reached $51.5 million, with a global box office income of $152 million. Variety reported that the North American early summer weekend box office revenue dropped by 65% compared to the same period last year, even more than the over 40% decrease from the period before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The lackluster performance of the summer cinema season this year is attributed to the strike by the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) last year, which led to a halt in Hollywood for several months and delayed the release of many major films until 2025 or later. Without new blockbuster releases to boost summer box office numbers, old movies like “Interplay of Illusions” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Birth of a Kingdom” continue to dominate the charts.

Apart from “Garfield” in North America, “Interplay of Illusions” grossed $10.8 million at the North American weekend box office, a 33% drop from the previous weekend, moving up from third to second place. The total North American box office revenue reached $80.42 million, with a global box office income of $138 million.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” slipped from the top spot to third place after its second weekend, with North American revenue of $10.75 million, a 59% decrease from the previous weekend. The total North American box office revenue stands at $49.66 million, with a global box office of $114 million.

In its fourth week of release, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” maintained its fourth position with a box office income of $8.8 million, a 34% drop from the previous weekend. The total North American box office revenue reached $140 million, marking the highest North American box office performance since March. Its global box office earnings have reached $337 million, making it the fourth highest-grossing film released in 2024.

“The Fall Guy” remained in fifth place in its fifth weekend, with North American weekend box office revenue of $4.2 million, only dropping by 30%. The total North American box office revenue reached $80.28 million, with a global box office of $157.9 million.

Despite the sluggish box office performance this week, the upcoming release of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence on June 7 in North America, along with Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” set to premiere on June 14, may bring in some box office revenue for theaters.
