Hello everyone, welcome to “News Analysis Today”, I am Jinshi, and I am Fuyao. Today is June 11, Wednesday.
Our guests today are: California journalist Zhang Boyuan from our station; current affairs commentator Lan Shu; senior political and economic analyst Qin Peng.
Today’s focus: The CCP’s dark hand escalates riots in Los Angeles, Trump deploys 5,000 soldiers to guard! Another Chinese female scientist caught with drugs, 122 mainland citizens deported!
Jinshi: Let’s first look at the latest situation of the riots in Los Angeles.
Since last Friday, protests against the federal government have erupted in Los Angeles, with demonstrators protesting against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s enforcement activities on illegal immigrants.
As of now, the protests and resulting riots have not subsided.
On Monday, the U.S. military announced the deployment of 700 Marines to the Los Angeles area to protect federal personnel and facilities. This is the first time in over 30 years that the U.S. has deployed Marines to a city to deal with riots.
Over the weekend, President Trump had already ordered 2,000 National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles. And on Monday night, a Defense Department spokesperson announced that an additional 2,000 National Guard members were also being called up. If all mobilized troops arrive in Los Angeles, there will be 5,000 soldiers in total.
Fuyao: With the escalation of the confrontation between the Los Angeles mayor, the California governor, and the federal government, along with the reinforcement of federal armed forces, the situation has escalated further.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement to conduct raids in the city. However, she also condemned the violent actions of the protesters. She said: Anyone who destroys downtown or loots stores does not care about our immigrant community and will be held accountable.
The Los Angeles police stated that there were agitators and rogue elements among the protesters engaged in destructive activities.
Governor of California Newsom described the federal intervention as an invasion of state sovereignty. He has filed a lawsuit against Trump’s deployment of military action as unconstitutional.
President Trump, on the other hand, mentioned on the 10th that he does not rule out the possibility of invoking the Insurrection Act in Los Angeles and criticized some protesters as “bad people” and “beasts,” accusing them of setting the city on fire.
Now turning to journalist Boyuan, Boyuan, you visited the scene personally yesterday. Can you tell us about the specific situation?
1. Mr. Lan, President Trump sent Marines to protect federal personnel and facilities in Los Angeles, which is unprecedented in thirty years. Why is sending Marines an extraordinary move? What kind of signal does Trump want to send with this action?
2. Mr. Qin, President Trump’s dispatch of National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles to deal with the riots has faced fierce opposition from the Democratic California governor and Los Angeles mayor. In your opinion, is this opposition a struggle between state sovereignty and federal authority in the U.S., or a battle of ideologies between the left and right in America?
Fuyao: Defense Secretary Haggis said the move is to protect the U.S. from harm by foreign agitators.
Among the organizations participating in the major protests in Los Angeles, there is a group called the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL). The Party for Socialism and Liberation has been involved in intense anti-Israel protests on the Columbia University campus, and is considered an extreme leftist organization by mainstream media and academia. This organization supports socialist regimes such as the CCP, Cuba, and Venezuela, and holds an anti-American stance.
According to investigations by media including the New York Post, the organization’s funders have financial transactions with several pro-China non-profit organizations, and have connections to channels related to the Chinese Communist Party.
In many immigration protests in Los Angeles, a large number of banners, flags, T-shirts, and slogans are from this organization, the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
3. Mr. Lan, in protests or major riots similar to what’s happening in Los Angeles, have you observed any suspicious signs? (Any involvement by the CCP?)
Jinshi: Just before the second round of trade negotiations between the U.S. and China in London, the FBI, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection, arrested another Chinese scientist named Han Chengxuan at Detroit airport.
Han Chengxuan had just arrived from China on Sunday, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the School of Life Sciences and Technology at Wuhan University in China.
According to the indictment, between 2024 and 2025, Chinese citizen Han Chengxuan was charged with smuggling sensitive biological materials into the U.S. She is accused of sending four packages from China to the U.S., containing hidden biological materials, sent to an individual at a laboratory at the University of Michigan. Shipping such items requires government permission.
Fuyao: Customs and Border Protection officials also found that Han made false statements about the contents of the packages containing sensitive biological materials sent to the U.S. She deleted the contents of her electronic devices before arriving in the U.S.
Han Chengxuan currently holds a J1 visa and was supposed to be a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan. She was denied U.S. visas twice before because she could not answer basic questions about herself or her research.
This is the second criminal case in two weeks involving Chinese researchers, the University of Michigan, and biological materials.
Previously, 33-year-old Chinese citizen Jian Yunqing and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Liu Zunyong, smuggled a potential “agricultural terrorism weapon,” the pathogen “Fusarium graminearum,” to the U.S.
This pathogen is highly destructive, causing crops to suffer from head blight, resulting in several billion dollars in losses globally annually and causing harm to human and animal health, resulting in vomiting, liver damage, reproductive defects, and more.
Liu Zunyong admitted to illegally carrying the pathogen for research at the University of Michigan laboratory where Jian Yunqing worked. Jian Yunqing is a Communist Party member funded by the CCP to study “Fusarium graminearum.”
American virologist Lin Xiaoxu: “Fusarium graminearum can survive in plant bodies for a long time. In the second winter, the fungus will generate spores again and reproduce asexually, spreading further. Therefore, special permits are required for such research. However, the University of Michigan where these two scholars are based did not obtain such permission.”
Jian Yunqing is a researcher at the University of Michigan, while Liu Zunyong works at Zhejiang University.
Lin Xiaoxu: “Zhejiang University has a military-civilian cooperation agreement with the military, which raises suspicions about whether they acted on the military’s instructions? To bring such dangerous fungi to threaten American food in the U.S. Because infected plants can cause serious harm to humans as well, so the whole thing resembles a terrorist attack.”)
4. Mr. Lan, in the first case, the FBI accused a Chinese researcher of carrying a “viral weapon,” and less than two weeks later, U.S. authorities indicted another case related to the University of Michigan involving the smuggling of sensitive biological materials. Do you see a connection between these incidents? Is this an action authorized by the Chinese authorities or individual academic and scientific research?
5. Mr. Qin, is this the U.S. officially starting to take such threats seriously and launching investigations? Or is the rapid escalation of Chinese scientists infiltrating a recent development?
Jinshi: Also, there is another piece of news that has drawn special attention from many Chinese friends recently.
According to information released by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on the 9th, a specially arranged high-risk charter flight took off from the U.S. on June 3, deporting 122 illegal Chinese citizens back to their home country. These deportees come from various detention centers across the U.S., ranging in age from 19 to 68, including 96 men and 26 women.
Fuyao: Among the deportees, several individuals have been convicted of serious crimes such as murder, rape, human trafficking, lewd acts on minors, and drug trafficking. ICE specifically pointed out: a 47-year-old man convicted of murder; a 27-year-old man convicted of rape; a 55-year-old man involved in human trafficking; and several individuals involved in drug crimes and bribery.
It appears that the U.S. is intensifying efforts to deport illegal immigrants, with Chinese citizens bearing the brunt. This mass deportation is the largest concentrated deportation of Chinese nationals since 2025.
6. Mr. Lan, previously, deportation of illegal immigrants was mainly targeting South American countries, but we see 122 Chinese citizens being deported on a flight. Why is that?
7. Mr. Qin, the underground infiltrators from the mainland and the officially deployed “unrestricted warfare” combatants are at different levels and have different impacts on American society. How do you see the various measures taken by the U.S. from official to civilian to counter the CCP?
Follow-up question: Will the policies and enforcement actions of the Trump administration hinder the hopes of those seeking freedom and a new life in America?
