New York Welcomes Pollen Allergy Season, Experts Share Prevention Methods

With the arrival of spring, New York is ushering in the annual allergy season. Many people have already started to experience symptoms of seasonal allergies such as itchy eyes and runny noses. Experts say that due to climate change, this year’s allergy season may arrive earlier and be more severe than in previous years.

According to a report from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, although New York City has been ranked as one of the “least allergic cities in America in 2024,” global climate change is expected to prolong the allergy season and make symptoms more severe.

As reported by FOX 5 NY, allergy specialist Dr. Marie Cavuoto Petrizzo predicts that the allergy season will continue until June, followed by a summer allergy period dominated by grass and pollen.

Dr. Petrizzo advises allergy sufferers to pay attention to weather reports and avoid going outdoors on days when pollen levels are high. Non-profit organizations provide pollen tracking websites to help residents stay informed about pollen levels and plan their daily activities accordingly.

For those experiencing irritation from pollen in their eyes, wearing sunglasses or a hat with a brim for protection is advisable. Upon returning home, it is recommended to immediately shower and change clothes to remove any pollen clinging to the body. Additionally, using air purifiers indoors and keeping windows closed to prevent pollen from entering can be beneficial.

Another allergy specialist, Dr. Nana Mireku, emphasizes that understanding one’s specific allergens is key to treatment. She advises allergy sufferers to consult an allergist before the allergy season begins to assess the need for long-term treatment such as immunotherapy. Dr. Mireku also mentions that over-the-counter nasal sprays and antihistamines are very effective in relieving symptoms and recommends starting to use them early in the allergy season.

Experts urge citizens to prepare in advance and adjust their lifestyle and work habits accordingly to minimize the impact of increasingly severe allergy seasons.
