New York City’s Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) launched the “National Work Zone Awareness Week” from April 15 to 19, emphasizing the importance of drivers reducing speed and proceeding with caution in construction zones to ensure traffic safety.
According to statistics, more than 900 people nationwide lose their lives in road construction zone accidents each year. Last year, several individuals in New York City were injured in such incidents. To address this, the city’s transportation department has increased monitoring and management of construction zones, enhanced the visibility of signs, and implemented various safety measures such as installing temporary traffic signals.
Rohit T. Aggarwala, Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), called on workers in the environmental field who work on roads around the clock, urging drivers passing through construction zones to exercise patience and vigilance.
Governor Kathy Hochul also stated that there would be targeted inspections on Interstate 104, as the highway experienced multiple speeding incidents last year, posing a serious threat to the safety of construction workers. The state government has allocated $27.8 million for road maintenance and safety improvement projects in the area to ensure traffic safety during the construction season.
Drivers are reminded that speeding in construction zones will result in double fines. According to the 2005 Work Zone Safety Act, repeated speeding violations in construction zones will lead to license suspension.
