New York City Police Department’s Fifth Precinct Launches Online Reporting System for Four Types of Cases

Recently, the 5th Precinct of the New York Police Department forwarded a newly developed online reporting system by the NYPD, along with accompanying instructional videos, allowing residents to report four specific types of incidents without the need to dial 911 or physically visit a police station. Through this system, individuals can submit incident reports online.

The system currently accepts reports for four specific types of incidents:

– Lost property: Items forgotten in public places.
– Petit Larceny: Theft of property valued at less than $1,000.
– Criminal Mischief: Intentional property damage with a value not exceeding $250.
– Graffiti: Vandalism such as painting, drawing, or scratching on property.

The police have also emphasized certain detailed requirements for the above reports. For instance, stolen items cannot be classified as “lost property,” and robbery does not fall under “petit larceny.” Intentional property damage is necessary to be classified as “criminal mischief,” and intentional graffiti on property constitutes a criminal offense.

While online reporting offers convenience, the system also reminds individuals that providing false reports to the police intentionally is a criminal offense. For the above four types of incidents, individuals can still visit police precinct offices in person to file reports as needed.
