New York City Police Department announced that the city recently set a record of 12 consecutive days without any homicides, matching the longest period of zero killings in history, as in 2015. However, this record came to an end on the evening of December 7th when a shooting incident occurred in the Bronx community.
According to authorities, the last homicide in New York City happened on November 24th. From then until December 7th, the city experienced 12 days without any homicides for the first time since 2015.
On the evening of December 7th, a 38-year-old man was shot in the head in the stairwell of Sotomayor Houses in the Bronx and was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.
Police highlighted that gun violence incidents and the number of victims in New York City have reached record lows in the first 11 months of the year. In November, the city saw only 16 homicides, a significant decrease of 46.6% compared to the same period last year, keeping pace with 2018, making it the lowest record for the same period in history. During the same month, Queens and Staten Island even had no homicides.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the decrease in homicides reflects the effectiveness of the police department’s strategies and execution. She said, “The right strategies and good execution are what break records time after time. We appreciate the dedication of NYPD members in reducing violent crimes.”
