New York City Councilman Hudson Concerned about Outdated Facilities at Humanism Center

The Father’s Day and Dragon Boat Festival celebration was held at the Hua Ce Hui Renaissance Center on the 18th, where Council Member Crystal Hudson showed concern about the outdated facilities of the center and pledged to follow up to assist in improvements.

Director Wu Baoling introduced special guests Liu Maoshuqing and Alice Tam Tien, who is running for civil judge. Liu Maoshuqing, one of the founders of Hua Ce Hui, urged the Chinese community to have more Chinese candidates running for office in order to enhance social status and welfare. She emphasized that only by having more Chinese government officials can the demands of the Chinese community be taken seriously.

Alice Tam Tien, an early immigrant from Hong Kong who moved to Chinatown with her parents at a young age, has 25 years of legal experience. She is running for civil judge to ensure that the court system provides fairness, respect, and dignity to the public. Having served as a court lawyer or chief legal clerk under various judges for 18 years, she is well-versed in all community matters.

Director Wu Baoling mentioned Council Member Hudson’s involvement in a meeting on International Women’s Day on March 8, where the issue of funding for elderly people was discussed. To advocate for the welfare of Chinese seniors, Wu Baoling attended the meeting that day, becoming the only Asian attendee and speaker, leaving a deep impression on Hudson. Hudson witnessed continuous issues with the facilities at the Renaissance Center over the past 20 years, with the home delivery meal service reduced from 3 drivers to 1, greatly impacting the operation of the center, which serves over 8,000 members. Hudson promised to follow up to assist in improvements.

During her visit to the Renaissance Center, Hudson also showed her skills in table tennis by defeating a skilled player from the center’s ping pong team. Aside from performances by the Renaissance song and dance troupe, a special red packet was presented to 98-year-old elder Lu Yan as a gesture of appreciation. Lu Yan sang her signature drinking song “Selling Vegetables” at the audience’s request, receiving warm applause. The center also generously distributed festival zongzi (rice dumplings) and abundant gift packages, adding warmth and happiness to the members during the June holiday season.
