New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol met to issue a joint statement reaffirming the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China welcomed this development, stating that Taiwan will continue to promote “value diplomacy” to safeguard democracy, peace, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
The South Korean presidential office announced that Prime Minister Luxon visited South Korea from the 4th to the 5th, holding bilateral talks with President Yoon Suk-yeol on the 4th. After the meeting, they released a joint statement emphasizing the significance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, as well as the freedom of navigation guaranteed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China issued a press release expressing high praise and sincere gratitude for the joint statement.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Taiwan will continue its efforts to maintain the current peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan opposes any regional hegemonic state that seeks to disrupt the status quo and welcomes like-minded countries to remain concerned about stability in the Taiwan Strait on the international stage, ensuring a rule-based international order through practical actions.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also mentioned that Taiwan will continue to promote “value diplomacy” in collaboration with other countries to uphold democracy, peace, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Previously, the United States and New Zealand engaged in strategic dialogue, highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. They also expressed serious concerns over China’s provocative actions in the South China Sea, particularly its actions towards Philippine vessels. The Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed high praise and sincere gratitude for the support of the U.S.-New Zealand strategic dialogue in promoting peace in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.
