New Jersey Transit Agency Releases Unused One-Way Ticket Refund Policy

NJ Transit Announces Refund Policy for Unused Tickets

New Jersey Transit Authority (NJ Transit) has declared that unused single-journey bus, rail, and light rail tickets purchased before June 1, 2024, will be eligible for a refund. Tickets purchased on or after June 1 cannot be refunded and must be used by July 31, 2024.

This refund policy also applies to the purchase of 10 single-journey tickets in one transaction.

Refunds will be processed as follows:

From August 1 to December 31, passengers can request a refund for any unused single-journey tickets or 10 single-journey tickets purchased before June 1 through the following methods.

Paper Tickets: Passengers must bring their unused paper tickets purchased before June 1 to the customer service office. Contact information must be provided along with the receipt. In the absence of a receipt, contact information and the last four digits of the credit card used for purchase are required. Refunds will take approximately three to four weeks to process.

Web Tickets: Passengers should print out any unused single-journey tickets purchased online before June 1 and follow the instructions for printing the ticket.

Mobile App Tickets: Any mobile app tickets purchased before June 1 but unused by August 1 will automatically convert into points in the customer’s electronic wallet equivalent to the value of the unused single-journey ticket. No action is needed from the customer to receive these points.

Refund requests for unused single-journey tickets and 10 single-journey tickets will not be accepted after August 1, 2024. The validity of these tickets will extend until July 31, 2024, and passengers are encouraged to utilize their tickets before this date.

The new single-journey ticket policy was first announced on January 24, 2024, as part of the New Jersey Transit Authority’s fare adjustment proposal.

Starting July 1, 2024, the validity period for all single-journey tickets, including 10 single-journey tickets, will be 30 days. This measure is expected to significantly reduce opportunities for fraud and save NJ Transit approximately $25 million annually.
