Amid the convening of the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, the bipartisan New Jersey State Council Taiwan Connection issued a joint statement on May 22, addressing the misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758, which seeks to hinder Taiwan’s international organization participation. The statement also voiced support for the United States’ continued assistance in Taiwan’s involvement in the World Health Organization (WHO), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), United Nations, and other international institutions.
State Senator Gordon Johnson and State Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak, serving as co-chairs of the Taiwan Connection, jointly hosted the “Taiwan Heritage Day” tea party for the first time at the state capital Trenton on the 22nd. During the event, they presented the joint statement to Lee Chih-Chiang, Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, and awarded a certificate of appreciation to the New Jersey Taiwan Chamber of Commerce.
Twenty state senators and assembly members, as well as New Jersey Taiwanese business leaders and community representatives, attended the event, showcasing the New Jersey State Council’s support for Taiwan.
In his address, Lee Chih-Chiang emphasized President Tsai Ing-Wen’s earlier proposal to establish a Taiwan Sovereign Wealth Fund, creating a national-level investment platform to enhance future Taiwan-U.S. trade interactions. He also acknowledged the long-standing contributions of Taiwanese businesses and compatriots in New Jersey, nurturing strong ties between Taiwan and the state of New Jersey.
