Renowned Chinese male star Yu Menglong tragically fell to his death on September 11, with many suspicions surrounding the incident. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities swiftly declared it an accident, yet have not disclosed any details, nor responded to the doubts raised by society. The authorities have also actively suppressed public opinion, leading to further speculation about hidden motives in the case. In response, netizens have recently launched a global petition titled “Seeking Justice for Yu Menglong,” garnering over 55,000 responses by midday on September 27.
On September 20, netizens initiated the global petition “Seeking Justice for Yu Menglong” through the international non-governmental organization “AVAAZ.” The article highlights the emergence of increasing audiovisual evidence, including a highly likely recording of Yu Menglong screaming in agony during an abuse incident, leading to the reasonable suspicion that “this may not be a natural death but possibly a planned brutal murder.”
The petition states that if proven true, this is not just a celebrity’s death but a severe violation of human rights and public safety. It presents three main demands: 1. Conduct a comprehensive, independent, and transparent investigation to bring justice to Yu Menglong; 2. If there are criminal facts, immediately prosecute the individuals involved with the most severe charges; 3. Relevant authorities must issue a public apology and provide legal and psychological support to the family.
The initiators emphasize that “justice does not come automatically; it requires our collective efforts. We cannot allow this case to be covered up or ignored. We urge Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International to pay attention to issues concerning artists’ life safety, personal freedom, and prevention of sexual abuse, and to pressure relevant authorities to improve the situation.”
In the conclusion of the petition, the initiators state that the signatories represent the society’s demands for human rights and justice. They call on “global citizens concerned about the Yu Menglong incident, as well as those who value human rights and artists’ working rights, to face this issue squarely, sign the petition in solidarity, bring justice to Yu Menglong, and ensure safety and equal job security for artists.”
