Nervous Groom Makes a Verbal Slip at Wedding, Guests Burst into Laughter

A nervous groom at a wedding slipped up with his vows, telling the bride that he would “smile at you when you are sad” instead of consoling her, which caused a burst of laughter. The 36-year-old groom, Robert Thomson, intended to say “comfort you when you are sad” to his 33-year-old bride, Amy Aldon, during their wedding at Reid Hall in Hadleigh, Essex, on April 13, 2023.

This slip of the tongue turned into a memorable moment for the couple, as they walked down the aisle to exchange their vows. The emotional groom became flustered, mixing up his words despite starting off correctly with the customary vows. “I ask everyone here to witness that I, Robert James Thompson, do take you, Amy Susan Hilary Jacqueline Aldon, to be my lawful wedded wife. When I take you as my wife, I promise to love and respect you,” he said.

Then, Mr. Thompson choked up a bit and deviated from the wedding script. “I will support you, be faithful to your will. I will care for you, smile at you when you are happy, smile at you when you are sad,” the groom said. Amid laughter from guests and the couple themselves, the officiant interjected, and Mr. Thompson corrected himself with the right words, “comfort you when you are sad.”

Following the ceremony, the newlyweds shared this awkward yet amusing and endearing moment. “It was a wonderful day. I was so nervous that I got my vows wrong,” said the construction worker Thompson. “I waited for Amy for nearly 45 minutes because she was late—this made me even more nervous!”

“I did find it funny, actually. It’s a moment that no one will forget. Our family and friends definitely found it amusing too!” said learning support assistant Amy. “It was like a ‘Carry On’ film! I think he only realized his mistake when the guests started laughing. We will never forget it.”
