Nearly 500 People Sent to Hospital with 3 in Critical Condition due to Food Poisoning from Suspected Bread in Vietnam.

In recent news from Dong Nai province in southern Vietnam, a mass food poisoning incident has occurred, with a large number of people experiencing symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea after consuming bread from a bakery. The number of affected individuals has surged from over 200 on May 2 to almost 500, with three people in critical condition.

Dong Nai province has witnessed a significant number of people developing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and headaches after consuming bread from a local bakery. It was discovered that all these individuals had eaten bread from the same bakery between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on April 30.

According to a report from Vietnam’s “Giao Thong” newspaper, Vo Thi Ngoc Lam, Deputy Director of the Dong Nai Department of Health, stated that as of the morning of May 3, the number of people affected by food poisoning had risen to 481.

Among the more severe cases are three individuals: a 13-year-old teenager diagnosed with enteritis, suspected acute diarrhea dehydration caused by bacteria, and septicemia; two children in critical condition, with a 6-year-old child in a coma and a 7-year-old child experiencing respiratory failure.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the bakery in question sells homemade bread filled with pate, meat sauce, and liver pate, with an average daily sale of 1000 loaves, and 1100 loaves sold on April 30 alone.

It has been discovered that the bakery owner used the business registration certificate of their daughter Phuong, who has been abroad since February 2023.

Additionally, the bakery lacks a food safety certificate, and none of the four staff members have received training or certification in food safety knowledge, nor have they undergone health check-ups.

Authorities have sealed the premises and sent samples for testing, as well as collected saliva samples from the four staff members. The bakery has been temporarily closed until obtaining a food safety certificate and the supervisory agency publishes its conclusions before resuming operations.
