On June 4th, rumors circulated online alleging that NCT members Lucas and Johnny engaged in illicit activities in Japan, causing a significant drop in the stock price of their management agency, SM Entertainment. Late on the 4th, SM Entertainment issued a statement denying the rumors and announcing their intention to take legal action internationally.
Some netizens shared screenshots on the internet on the 4th from a Japanese netizen’s Instagram story. The screenshots claimed that Johnny and Lucas engaged in sexual activities with women working at entertainment establishments during their visit to Japan in March for a concert tour. Subsequently, another photo surfaced online, showing Super Junior member Kim Hee-chul allegedly in an entertainment venue in Japan.
Despite Hee-chul clarifying on the messaging platform Bubble that he never drank or met with junior colleagues outside the company, and had no contact information for them, the rumors surrounding Johnny and Lucas remained unresolved, sparking discussions among netizens.
In response, SM Entertainment issued a statement late on the 4th, stating, “The internet is spreading sensational rumors without regard to facts, alleging that Johnny and Lucas engaged in sexual acts, drug use, and other taboo behaviors. Upon verification, we found that these claims are entirely untrue and constitute criminal actions that severely damage the artists’ reputations.”
SM Entertainment continued, “Rumors and malicious slandering against NCT and other artists under our management, such as Kim Hee-chul, persist. We have gathered ample evidence regarding the online posts related to these matters and will not stand idly by in the face of such criminal behavior. Regardless of nationality, we will pursue legal consequences without compromise or leniency. The dissemination of any malicious content now could result in punishment, and we urge everyone to be mindful.”
This situation highlights the impact of false information and the importance of verifying rumors before spreading them online, especially when it comes to the reputation and well-being of public figures. As investigations continue and legal actions are taken, it underscores the need for responsible behavior in sharing information and respecting the privacy and integrity of individuals involved.
