On April 30, according to mainland media reports, Yu Chenggong, the director of Nanjing Gulou Hospital, and his wife and daughter were seriously injured in an attack on April 28. Currently, Yu Chenggong is believed to be out of danger.
On the evening of April 28, a shocking stabbing incident occurred in Nanjing. Reports indicate that Yu Chenggong, director of Nanjing Gulou Hospital, was followed by someone to his home and brutally attacked along with his wife, leading to critical injuries.
A local chat group in Nanjing revealed that the assailant was the boyfriend of Yu Chenggong’s daughter, who attacked the family, injuring them severely. Tragically, Yu Chenggong’s wife succumbed to her injuries, while the father and daughter were left critically wounded.
Reports from netizens suggest that Yu Chenggong’s 32-year-old daughter, known for her immature infatuation, was in a relationship with a boyfriend primarily for his looks and not his character, which her parents disapproved of.
Another comment mentioned that the daughter suffered multiple facial wounds from the attack, requiring her father to undergo emergency plastic surgery late at night. The director’s wife’s blood pressure dropped to 40, and both the husband and wife are currently in intensive care fighting for their lives.
Official statements indicated that there is no evidence of Yu Chenggong treating the attacker prior to the incident, discrediting rumors of emotional conflicts between the assailant and Yu Chenggong’s family.
The incident quickly gained traction on Weibo, with users expressing concerns about the heightened risks faced by medical professionals. On the same day, two hospitals in Nanjing and Tianjin encountered tragic events, with the incident involving Nanjing Gulou Hospital’s director making headlines while a similar event in Tianjin that resulted in 2 deaths and 4 injuries went unreported, sparking criticism about media coverage discrepancies.
Nanjing Gulou Hospital, also known as Nanjing University School of Medicine Affiliated Gulou Hospital, is a renowned tertiary hospital founded in 1892, being one of the earliest Western hospitals in China with over 4,300 beds and employing more than 6,200 staff members.
Public records show that Yu Chenggong was born in October 1965 in Huaiyang County, Zhoukou City, Henan Province. He entered Xinxiang Medical College in 1983, pursued a master’s degree at Shandong Medical University in 1991, obtained a doctorate at Shanghai Second Medical University (now Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine), and later conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School in the United States in 2003 and 2006. Apart from serving as the director of Nanjing Gulou Hospital, Yu Chenggong is a chief physician, associate professor, and doctoral supervisor.
This disturbing incident sheds light on the challenges and risks faced by medical professionals in their line of duty, highlighting the need for increased awareness and support for their safety and well-being.
