Residents in Binhai County, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, expressed that a loud noise suddenly occurred in the area, causing a strong tremor. Some internet users speculated it might be a “sonic boom from fighter jets.” However, the officials have not directly responded to the incident.
Recently, several netizens posted videos claiming that on the evening of May 27th around 8:33 pm, a loud noise erupted in Binhai, Jiangsu, prompting many to question if it was related to “sonic boom from aircraft?”
Some netizens commented that the tremor was quite intense. Others speculated it could be the “sonic boom from fifth-generation stealth fighter jets.”
Reported by Jiemu News, on the afternoon of May 28th, contact was made with the Yancheng Municipal Emergency Management Department. A staff member mentioned that they had not received any similar emergency information or relevant notifications.
The report stated that upon contacting the Binhai County Government Office on the same day to verify the situation, the staff recommended reaching out to the Propaganda Department. However, both the Propaganda Department and the News Department of Binhai County Committee did not respond.
Following the report, some netizens made comments.
A Jiangsu netizen, “Yeyepai Niandoubao,” stated: “The sonic boom from fighter jets happens frequently in Xiangshui near the sea, they fly around for no reason, causing sonic booms occasionally.”
An Anhui netizen, “Mage Luo,” questioned: “Is it really the sonic boom from fighter jets? The relevant departments should respond. Firstly, to avoid unnecessary speculations, and secondly, such disturbing sonic booms might pose risks to people?”
A Guangxi netizen, “Liu…,” explained: “A sonic boom occurs when an aircraft flying at supersonic speeds catches up to its sound and creates a louder noise. Commercial aircraft generally fly at around 800 kilometers per hour, significantly below the speed of sound, hence unable to generate sonic booms. Advanced fighter jets can easily surpass the sound barrier, leading to sonic boom occurrences.”
A Jiangxi netizen, “Yangwangtiankong,” shared: “I can hear this noise every now and then here, every time the planes or fighter jets train at low altitudes, it causes sonic booms!”
Similar incidents have occurred before.
In a previous media report, around 6:20 pm on December 4, 2024, a massive noise was heard in Binhai County, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, shaking windows and even causing surveillance footage to shake. Citizens reported being alarmed by the event, which also drew attention from internet users.
The local emergency management department acknowledged having seen the information online but mentioned they had not received any alerts. A staff member stated, “I personally saw it on Douyin; it’s not just in this area where this noise is heard, it seems like even in Xuzhou, Taizhou, too.” They speculated that the loud noise might be a sonic boom from aircraft, and any accidents related to production safety would prompt the emergency management department to issue notifications.
