“Mother’s Life Wish” Takes Second Place in Vietnam Box Office Rankings

A phenomenon-level viewing frenzy in Vietnam has been sparked by the upcoming release of the movie “Mother’s Life Wish” (Face Off 7: One Wish), which is set to premiere in Taiwan. The teaser trailer brings a heartfelt reflection to the audience, posing the question – is a lonely elderly mother who has fallen on hard times burdensome to her children? Her story may bring tears to viewers’ eyes.

“Mother’s Life Wish” tells the story of Mrs. Hai, a 73-year-old woman (portrayed by Qing Xian), who raised five children on her own after her husband’s early passing. When her children grow up and scatter across different places, she is left all alone in her rural hometown. Her biggest wish is to take a family portrait with all of her children and grandchildren.

One day, Mrs. Hai gets into a car accident and fractures her bones, leading her to rely on a wheelchair for daily activities. The children cannot agree on who should take care of their mother, and they ultimately decide to take turns caring for her on a weekly basis. As Mrs. Hai moves between each child’s home, she witnesses the challenges they face, making her feel like a burden to them…

The film has been a huge success in Vietnam, currently earning 4.76 trillion Vietnamese dong (approximately 6.05 billion New Taiwan dollars), surpassing Hollywood blockbusters like “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “Avengers: Endgame” in local revenue. It has topped the box office for four consecutive weeks and now holds the second spot on the Vietnamese box office ranking. Following the premiere in Taiwan on the 12th, the film received a positive response from the audience, with some moved to tears and others praising its powerful soundtrack.

On the 13th, the movie premiered in the United States, with director Li Hai attending with his wife and four children. Li Hai stated, “I hope that Vietnamese films and the image of our country and people portrayed in them will be loved by audiences worldwide.” Many local Vietnamese celebrities and expatriates attended the event, with viewers expressing, “It’s really beautiful and meaningful,” “A movie that will make everyone cry,” and “Remember to bring tissues.”

On the 14th, the film was released in 12 countries including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Australia, becoming the first Vietnamese film to simultaneously premiere on three continents (North America, Europe, Oceania). The global release in over 270 cinemas has also set a new record in film history.

Starring the 70-year-old “Grandma of Vietnam” Thanh Hiền, who has appeared in over 700 screen projects, “Mother’s Life Wish” has garnered attention for the on-screen chemistry between the up-and-coming Vietnamese actors Thái Vũ, who plays the eldest grandson “Awe”, and Ceri, who portrays the eldest granddaughter “Xiao Wei”. Their remarkable performances have sparked discussions, with some noting similarities to K-pop group “2PM” member Nichkhun and popular South Korean actress Kim Do Mi.

“Mother’s Life Wish” is set to premiere in Taiwan on June 21st.
