During the summer season, the electricity usage and bills for home living also increase significantly. Southern California Edison (SCE) reminds the public that the Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) program has expanded its criteria, allowing more customers to qualify for electricity bill discounts.
The FERA program assists eligible customers in reducing their electricity bills based on income requirements. Previously, the program was only open to families of three or more people, with successful applicants receiving an 18% monthly electricity bill discount. With the criteria now expanded, one or two-person households can also apply. This change took effect on June 1st.
According to SCE data, in 2024, over 32,000 customers enrolled in the FERA program collectively saved nearly $15 million, with an average annual savings of $450 per household.
Brian Stonerock, Director of Advanced Energy Solutions at SCE, expressed the hope that this initiative can help customers alleviate the burden of energy expenses, stating that the relaxation of criteria is a significant step forward in supporting energy equity and affordability.
Qualifications for applying to the FERA program are based on household size and income. For one or two-person households, the income range is between $42,301 and $52,875, while for a three-person household, the income must not exceed $66,625. The income limit increases with larger household sizes.
Once successfully enrolled in the FERA program, qualification must be recertified every two years. For those with fixed incomes, recertification can be extended to every four or six years.
SCE also mentioned that they offer various discount programs, and eligible individuals are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
