Minister of the Marshall Islands, John Silk, visits Taiwan

The Republic of the Marshall Islands Minister of Justice, Immigration and Labour, Hon. Wisely Zackhras and his spouse, are currently on a visit to Taiwan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has warmly welcomed their visit.

In a press release issued today (12th), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “Minister Zackhras of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, at the invitation of our government, will lead a delegation to Taiwan from May 12th to 16th. This visit marks Minister Zackhras’ first official visit since taking office.”

During his visit, Minister Zackhras will be hosted to a luncheon by Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu and will sign the “Criminal Justice Mutual Assistance Treaty between the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands” with Minister of Justice Tseng Ming-chien to enhance cooperation in the field of criminal justice between the two countries.

Furthermore, Minister Zackhras will also meet with agencies such as the National Police Agency, the Immigration Department, and the Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Justice for in-depth discussions on related issues.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) emphasized that “Taiwan and the Marshall Islands have been diplomatic allies for 27 years. The government of the Marshall Islands has long been a staunch supporter of Taiwan’s international participation, and both countries have closely collaborated in areas such as climate change, agriculture, clean energy, and healthcare, fostering a strong and friendly relationship.”

In celebration of the 46th Constitution Day of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Vice President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Lai Ching-te delivered a video speech at the “46th Constitution Day Celebration Reception of the Republic of the Marshall Islands” on the evening of the 9th, expressing her heartfelt wishes on behalf of the people and the government of Taiwan to the people and the government of the Marshall Islands.

Vice President Lai expressed her gratitude to President Haini and her government for their longstanding support of Taiwan’s international engagement. She stated, “In the 27 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the Marshall Islands, our mutually beneficial friendship has grown stronger. Cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, food security, capacity building, climate resilience, and women’s empowerment has yielded fruitful results. I assure our Marshall Islands brothers and sisters that Taiwan will uphold the spirit of mutual benefit and continue to work hand in hand with all of you.”

She expressed her hope for the deepening of friendship between Taiwan and the Marshall Islands in the future, aiming to set an example of cooperation and prosperity in the Pacific region.
