On Monday (September 8), a freight train collided with a double-decker bus in Mexico, resulting in at least 10 deaths and 41 injuries.
The accident occurred on the Atlacomulco-Maravatio federal highway in Atlacomulco, Mexico, located about 120 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.
Photos from the scene show the front part of the bus’s top deck destroyed, with the metal frame deformed. After the incident, emergency personnel cordoned off the area.
The Civil Protection Department of the state of Mexico reported that the accident resulted in 10 deaths and 41 injuries. According to the State Attorney General’s Office, the 10 victims included 7 females and 3 males.
According to Mexico News Daily, the train was transporting cars to northern Mexico at the time of the accident.
Adrian Hernandez, head of the Civil Protection Department in the state of Mexico, stated that he was informed the bus driver has been arrested. The driver’s condition is currently unclear.
Emergency response teams handled the accident, with the injured being taken to several state hospitals in Mexico. Reports indicate that some of the injuries are serious.
Odilon Lopez Nava, an official from the Canapat Transport Association of the state of Mexico, stated the bus was en route to Mexico City.
Nava told El Financiero, “The victims were workers on their way to Mexico City.”
The train was operated by the Kansas City Southern de Mexico, a subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railroad Company. The company confirmed the “terrible accident” in a statement, mentioning that the bus attempted to “cross ahead” of the train at a railway crossing.
The company expressed regret for the victims and extended its deepest condolences to their families. They also mentioned that their officials are collaborating with relevant departments at the accident site and will provide “all necessary information” to assist in the investigation.
