First Lady Melania Trump will host a stamp first-day ceremony at the White House to commemorate former First Lady Barbara Bush.
The event, scheduled for Thursday (May 8th), will see Melania Trump honoring former First Lady Barbara Bush at the White House. The U.S. Postal Service will unveil the new commemorative stamp during the ceremony.
Barbara was the late wife of the 41st U.S. President George H.W. Bush and the mother of the 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush. She passed away in 2018 at the age of 92.
Like President Trump, both of these former presidents are Republicans. However, there have been tensions between the Bush family and Trump, particularly with Barbara, who has publicly criticized Trump on multiple occasions. One of the reasons for this tension dates back to the 2016 Republican presidential primaries when former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Barbara’s son and President George W. Bush’s brother, fiercely competed against Trump, sparking conflicts between the two families.
Trump later responded to Barbara’s criticism, stating that given his victory over her son Jeb Bush during the election, he expected such sentiments from her. “I hear she’s very nasty to me, but she should be,” Trump said in 2019.
The commemorative stamp first-day ceremony on Thursday will take place in the White House East Room. Barbara’s daughter, Doro Bush Koch, along with other family members, U.S. Postal Service acting Chief Postmaster General Doug Tulino, and Alice Yates, CEO of the George & Barbara Bush Foundation, will attend the event.
The event is expected to honor the legacy of Barbara Bush and celebrate her contributions to American society and politics.
