Renowned Chinese Academy of Engineering member and expert in respiratory medicine, critical care medicine, community medicine, and public health, Wang Chen, has been relieved of his duties as the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He is also a member of the 13th and 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
The announcement was made on September 11th by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of the Chinese Communist Party. According to official sources, Wang Chen’s role as Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering has been terminated.
Public records show that Wang Chen was born in August 1962 in Dezhou City, Shandong Province. He is an expert in respiratory medicine and critical care medicine, specializing in research on respiratory system diseases. In 2013, he was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Throughout his career, he has held various positions such as Deputy Director and Director of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University, Deputy Director of the Beijing Institute of Respiratory Diseases, and Deputy Director and Director of the Respiratory Center at Beijing Hospital of the Ministry of Health.
In February 2013, Wang Chen served as the Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology, and Education of the former Ministry of Health and the National Health and Family Planning Commission. From September 2014 to January 2018, he was the President of the China-Japan Friendship Hospital. Since January 2018, he has been serving as the President of Peking Union Medical College.
On August 15th of this year, the website of Peking Union Medical College announced that Wang Chen would no longer hold the positions of President of the college and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee. He was succeeded by neurology expert and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Ji Xunming.
On the same day, the National Health Commission of the Chinese Communist Party reported that the “4+4” pilot program at Peking Union Medical College had issues with inadequate planning, lax management, and insufficient implementation. The National Health Commission and the Ministry of Education instructed Peking Union Medical College to carry out comprehensive reforms.
In April of this year, the “4+4” pilot program at Peking Union Medical College came under scrutiny due to the Xiaomou Dongmouying incident.
It is worth noting that in early July of this year, Wu Manqing, another Chinese Academy of Engineering member who was rumored to be under investigation last year, was also removed from his position as Vice President of the Academy. From July 2022 to July 2025, Wu Manqing had been serving as the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Wu Manqing, born in August 1965 in Tongcheng, Anhui Province, is an expert in radar technology and network information systems. He is often referred to as the “founder” of China’s digital phased array radar theory and technology and has contributed to the development of the radar for the AEW&C 500 aircraft. For 22 years, from 1990 to 2012, Wu Manqing worked at the 38th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) and served as the director from 2001 to 2012.
In 2012, Wu Manqing was appointed as the Chief Engineer of CETC and the Director of the Academy of Electronic Science. Five years later, he was promoted to Deputy General Manager and served as the General Manager from August 2018 to September 2022.
In March 2017, Wu Manqing also served as the director of the National Engineering Laboratory for “Social Security Risk Perception and Prevention and Control Big Data Application,” which was located in Urumqi, Xinjiang. The laboratory focused on research related to the Chinese Communist Party’s use of big data for human rights violations and maintaining stability.
