MBTA Orange Line subway to be suspended for several days in June.

In order to continue upgrading the aging infrastructure, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced that the Orange Line subway will be partially suspended from June 22 to 23 on the weekend and from June 24 to 30.

During the weekend of June 22 and 23, the Orange Line subway will be suspended all day between North Station and Oak Grove.

Subsequently, from June 24 to 30, the Orange Line subway will be suspended all day between North Station and Wellington.

During the suspension period, free shuttle buses will be provided to transport passengers along these segments, stopping at each subway station along the route.

Additionally, passengers will be able to ride the Haverhill commuter rail line for free during this period, traveling between Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station. However, regular fare will apply after departing Oak Grove station.

MBTA states that the purpose of this shutdown is to advance the renovation project for the upper structure of the Maffa Way/Mystic Avenue bridge in the transportation department. This project involves replacing the deteriorated upper structure of the bridge and improving bike lanes, sidewalks, and other transportation facilities.

At the same time, MBTA will use this period to upgrade the subway tracks to eliminate slowdown areas between Community College station and Sullivan station on the Orange Line. The agency will also enhance other facilities within the subway stations, including signal equipment, wall paint, and floor cleaning.

MBTA further explains that due to the extensive nature of the work, they plan to temporarily close the Orange Line subway again later this year to facilitate construction. These projects are aimed at providing passengers with a more reliable subway service.
