Mayor Adams responds to clashes at Bensonhurst detention center sudden construction

New York City Councilwoman Susan Zhuang was arrested for protesting the construction of a homeless shelter in Bensonhurst and biting a police officer. Mayor Adams stated on July 18 during an interview that he plans to meet with Zhuang to discuss possible solutions for the local homeless situation.

Residents of Bensonhurst protested on July 17 against the city’s plans to build a homeless shelter, leading to clashes with law enforcement. Zhuang was arrested for biting Deputy Patrolman Frank DiGiacomo’s arm in an attempt to protect an elderly woman. She is facing charges of second and third-degree assault, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration. Mayor Adams expressed surprise at the situation, noting that Zhuang is known to be very supportive of the police and has been working closely with law enforcement and the city government.

Adams also expressed concern for DiGiacomo’s injuries, stating that his forearm was seriously bitten and expressing hope for his recovery. When asked about the appropriateness of the charges against Zhuang, Adams maintained his consistent stance on attacks against police officers, emphasizing that police are carrying out their duties and therefore, the charges are appropriate.

Defending the city’s decision to establish a homeless shelter in Bensonhurst, Adams acknowledged the resistance from local communities, noting that while no one wants a shelter in their neighborhood, each council district must share responsibility for addressing the immigration and homeless crisis. He reiterated his intention to reach a resolution with Zhuang and stressed the importance of finding nonviolent solutions to the issue, emphasizing that the situation regarding homeless shelters has become highly emotional.

During a press conference on July 18, Zhuang stated that her actions were aimed at protecting an elderly community member, criticizing the police response as shocking. She described her arrest, alleging mistreatment by police, including handcuffing, hair-pulling, and choking that made breathing difficult. Zhuang highlighted that the incident was unexpected and should not have happened to anyone.

She condemned the police violence and misuse of authority, pointing out that such issues are not isolated incidents, with many Asian-American community members experiencing excessive policing. Bensonhurst Democratic Party Chair and State Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn staunchly defended Zhuang, suggesting her actions were in self-defense. Hermelyn emphasized Zhuang’s support for law enforcement and her endorsements from several police unions during her campaign.

At a press conference yesterday afternoon, Zhuang urged citizens to mobilize and encouraged everyone to register and vote, advocating for the removal of elected officials who support the establishment of homeless shelters. She emphasized the need for community unity in addressing the issue and urged individuals to engage their friends in the voting process.
