On August 22, the Ukrainian army continued to open up new battlefields in Russia, launching an attack into the Bryansk Oblast from the northern border of Ukraine and Russia. This marks the third Russian oblast that the Ukrainian army has entered after penetrating the Kursk Oblast and Belgorod Oblast. Bryansk Oblast is located at the junction of Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, and is the closest Ukrainian border to Moscow, just 450 kilometers away.
Currently, the Ukrainian army has formed three encirclements in the Kursk region, with the largest one near the Sem River in the west, where up to 3000 Russian soldiers may be surrounded. However, there is no information yet indicating that the Ukrainian army has launched an attack on the surrounded Russian forces. The Ukrainian army might be aiming to force the surrounded Russian troops to surrender, as it is evident that the Russian army is unable to rescue these trapped units, let alone effectively stop the Ukrainian army’s advance. By surrounding but not attacking the Russian forces, besides being able to continue to request assistance, it can effectively avoid the personnel losses and resource consumption brought about by a direct assault.
While fierce battles rage on the frontlines, the Russian and Ukrainian armies are also engaging in long-range attacks on each other. At present, the Ukrainian army holds the upper hand in these long-range attacks. On the 22nd, the Ukrainian army launched large-scale drone attacks on 10 Russian oblasts, including the Marienfeld Air Force Base. The metal aircraft shelters and infrastructure at the Marienfeld Air Force Base suffered severe damage, with at least 2 Su-34s destroyed and more aircraft damaged. The Ukrainian army also destroyed an important ferry, directly impacting the fuel supply to Crimea.
As Russia and Ukraine clash, China has sided with Russia, with many Chinese nationalists and Russian supporters joining the Russian army to bring glory to Russia. However, the battlefield is treacherous, with some Chinese citizens dying on the frontline in Ukraine on the second day, described by Chinese netizens as “the first battle is the final battle.”
Chinese and Russian soldiers of Chinese nationality posted on social media platforms expressing disbelief upon hearing the news of the deaths of two comrades. The posts mentioned that from the vanguard camp in Moscow to the rear units, compatriots who had lived and dined together have “already lost four,” and perhaps it will soon be their turn (to die).
Many Chinese netizens are discussing the situation, saying, “Many young people nowadays think that going to the battlefield is like playing online games, not realizing the seriousness of it.” “War is truly cruel, and one cannot act recklessly.”
