In New York City, Manhattan’s sky-high rent is already a well-known fact, but just how high is it really? According to a recent study by the rental website RentCafe, with a monthly rent of $1,500, one can only afford an apartment of approximately 228 square feet (21 square meters) in Manhattan.

According to RentCafe’s ranking of “Apartment Size for $1,500 Monthly Rent in 100 Large U.S. Cities”, Manhattan occupies the last spot, at number 100, with only 21 square meters of space available for rent.

The city of Wichita, Kansas, takes the top spot, where $1,500 can get you a spacious apartment of 1,359 square feet (about 126 square meters), equivalent to a three-bedroom apartment. Brooklyn and Queens, two other areas of New York City, also rank near the bottom of the list. Brooklyn is at number 99, with $1,500 only getting you 300 square feet, while Queens is at number 95, offering just 370 square feet. Looking at other cities in the greater New York area, Jersey City, New Jersey ranks at number 96, providing 340 square feet for $1,500, and Newark ranks at number 70, offering 696 square feet.

On a national average, with a monthly rent of $1,500, one can expect to rent an apartment with an average area of 729 square feet.
