Manhattan congestion pricing began on Sunday, January 5th, and along with it came the phishing scams. The official toll collection system, “Tolls by Mail New York,” issued a special warning to the public to beware of criminals trying to steal personal information.
Even before the congestion pricing took effect, “Tolls by Mail New York” had already identified a fraudulent text message scam attempting to impersonate official entities for fee collection. These types of phishing emails or text messages urge people to take immediate action to avoid fines or account suspension; they may also provide links to phishing websites with URLs containing strange numbers or symbols, and potentially obvious spelling errors. In addition to trying to deceive people into making direct payments, scammers may also attempt to solicit sensitive information such as personal login details, passwords, bank or credit card information, PIN codes, or social security numbers.
On its website, “Tolls by Mail New York” reminds the public that such messages or emails are not from E-ZPass or any authorized entity associated with E-ZPass, and E-ZPass will never ask for customers’ personal information. If individuals receive emails or text messages from strangers, they are advised not to click on any links and, if suspicious, to forward the email to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at [email protected], or call the E-ZPass New York customer service center at 800-333-8655 (TOLL).
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) also stated that within the first 60 days of congestion pricing implementation, no fines or penalties will be imposed.
Once the 60-day grace period ends, late fees will be enforced, with a $5 fee after 30 days and $50 after 60 days. Drivers can make payments through mail, phone (844-826-8400), or in person at designated locations using cash, check, credit card, or bank card options. However, utilizing E-ZPass remains the most convenient method, offering a 25% discount. To register for E-ZPass, visit the website: https://www.e-zpassny.com/en/signup/step1.shtml ◇
