Man with knife injures three in Shanghai Metro Line 9

On the morning of June 19, a stabbing incident occurred on Line 9 of the Shanghai Metro, leaving three people injured. The suspect has been apprehended.

According to a statement released on the official Weibo account of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau Urban Rail and Bus Detachment on the 19th, at 8:28 am, a stabbing incident took place inside the Hechuan Road station on Line 9. The 54-year-old suspect, surnamed Shen (male), injured three people before being captured.

The statement did not disclose details of the stabbing incident, the motive, or the identities of those involved.

Netizens speculated, “A 54-year-old middle-aged unemployed man? The one at Beishan Park in Jilin City last time was also a 55-year-old middle-aged unemployed man.”

Shanghai netizens have called for strict security checks repeatedly. However, some other netizens responded, “It’s useless. He started the attack outside the ticket gate.” “Those who attack outside the gate, what does it have to do with security checks?”

Another netizen commented, “Harsh punishment is needed. Line 9 has the highest passenger flow in the morning and must be thoroughly inspected.” “Subway security checks have been in place for a long time. You ask to check that bag, but if you lower your head, what can you see?? Passing through the machine, I once brought a fruit knife to cut fruit at work, and it wasn’t detected during the security check.”

The reference to the “Beishan Park in Jilin City” incident mentioned by netizens refers to the stabbing of four American teachers from Cornell College in Iowa on June 10 at Beishan Park in Jilin City. The perpetrator was a 55-year-old man from Longtan District, Jilin City, named Cui.
