On November 4, 2025, a man from mainland China attempted to meet with Hong Kong’s wealthiest man, Li Ka-shing but was unsuccessful. In frustration, he splashed red paint in the lobby of the Cheung Kong Group’s headquarters, under the Li family, and was subsequently arrested by the police.
According to reports from various Hong Kong media outlets, the man from mainland China arrived in Hong Kong on November 3. On the morning of the 4th, he purchased three cans of red paint in a store in Tai Po district. He then proceeded to the lobby reception of the Cheung Kong Group headquarters on Queen’s Road Central in Central, Hong Kong, where he demanded to meet with Li Ka-shing. After being refused, he splashed the red paint in the lobby towards the elevators. A security guard who tried to stop him was attacked in the process.
The 49-year-old man, surnamed Chen, holding a multiple-entry permit between mainland China and Hong Kong, was arrested by the police. He has been charged with assault and criminal damage. The 57-year-old security guard who was attacked suffered swelling in his neck and was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Following the incident, the floor of the lobby and the glass facade above the elevator doors in the Cheung Kong Group headquarters were smeared with red paint. The management arranged for the area to be cleaned up. When approached by the media for comment, Cheung Kong Group stated that the matter was now in the hands of the police. Reports from the scene suggested that the man involved may have had mental health issues.
Apart from the Cheung Kong Group, the headquarters also houses various tenants, including Barclays Bank, Bank of America, Bloomberg, and other well-known companies.
