Actor Xie Mengwei, who portrayed “Brother Ga” in the Communist brainwashing anti-Japanese drama “Little Soldier Zhang Ga”, was recently detained for 7 days for wearing a Communist Party police uniform while live-streaming sales. On September 18, his popular Kuaishou account with over ten million followers was also banned.
Before this incident, internet users watching Xie Mengwei’s live stream noticed him wearing a Communist police uniform while promoting products, prompting them to report it to the Yunnan police.
Video footage from September 10 shows “Brother Xie Mengwei” wearing a police uniform during a live stream on an online platform, without wearing a police badge or emblem but with police shoulder and arm patches. During the live stream, in addition to interacting with fans, he also sold an electronic product combining a power bank and portable WiFi. When fans questioned his wearing of the police uniform during the live stream, he responded with profanity, claiming that they were riding on his popularity.
Amidst escalating public opinion, Xie Mengwei issued a statement on September 13, explaining that the police uniform seen in the video was a costume provided by the drama production team and apologized to the authorities.
On September 17, the Public Security Bureau of Gengma County in Yunnan released a report stating that after receiving public reports, it was found that Xie wore clothing with obvious police markings during a live stream sales session, causing “adverse social effects”, leading to his 7-day administrative detention.
On September 18, Xie Mengwei’s Kuaishou account was banned, making his main video page inaccessible. Prior to the ban, he had 11.65 million followers.
Public records indicate that Xie Mengwei was born in 1989 in Baoding, Hebei, and graduated from the China Conservatory of Music. He gained fame in 2003 for his role as the male lead “Zhang Ga” in the brainwashing TV drama “Little Soldier Zhang Ga”, earning the nickname “Brother Ga” among netizens.
In recent years, Xie Mengwei has ventured into live streaming sales but has frequently courted controversy, being labeled negatively for “selling fake alcohol and phones” during live streams.
According to mainland media reports, Xie Mengwei’s detention occurred while he was in Yunnan filming the main theme movie “Drug Bust Storm”. The film producer “Mama Ka” confirmed to the media that Xie Mengwei’s scenes in the movie will be removed, and reshooting will be needed for the scenes he participated in. A leaked photo from the filming site of “Drug Bust Storm” shows Zou Zhaolong, Clara, and Xie Mengwei as the lead actors, with Xie Mengwei playing a character named Darnaykun.
