Recent News: Durian, known as the king of fruits in mainland China, has experienced a price drop, sparking a buzz on social media. In Hangzhou, the price of durian has plummeted to 18 yuan per Jin (Chinese currency unit).
The king of fruits, durian, has surprisingly dropped in price recently, with prices falling by 20-30% and trending online. So, what are the current prices of durian in the market in Hangzhou?
According to a report from Hangzhou Voice on the evening of the 24th, when Jinzhen durian just hit the market, it was priced at 50 yuan per Jin, totaling 250 yuan for a 5-Jin durian. After the price drop, durians are being sold in many places for 18 yuan per Jin, making a single durian only 90 yuan. Durian prices have been slashed significantly.
At a fruit store in Hangzhou, the durians at the entrance are prominently displayed, occupying the most central position.
The months of May to July are the peak season for durian sales, and sales of durians in the store have been very hot, with up to around 700 Jin (350 kg) being sold in a day at its peak. The staff mentioned that they expect durian prices to drop further in about half a month.
It was reported that in another fruit store at night, the price was compared, and a special price of 22.8 yuan was seen for Jinzhen B durians at the entrance.
After a stroll at the morning market, it was observed that there were not many stalls selling durians, but the prices were indeed cheap, with many starting with the number “1”.
One stall owner mentioned that durian prices started dropping over half a month ago. Currently, Jinzhen durian type A is selling for 22 yuan per Jin, while type B is even cheaper at only 18 yuan per Jin.
Due to the low prices and good quality of durians, sales have been very good recently. The stall owner mentioned that on the busiest day, they sold 100 boxes of durians, roughly around 3000 Jin (1500 kg).
In mid-May, Red Star News reported that on May 12th, in a fruit store on Yulin Road in Chengdu, Sichuan, Ms. Zheng was selecting durians and mentioned, “Durians are noticeably cheaper now. For instance, Jinzhen durians are now only a little over 20 yuan, while last month they were over 30 yuan.” It’s currently the peak season for durians, where around 4-Jin Jinzhen durians can be bought for just over 100 yuan.
In a Hema Fresh Store in Wuhou District, Chengdu, Jinzhen durians are priced at 29.9 yuan per Jin. The sales staff mentioned, “Since May, prices have significantly dropped, and sales have been very high. We sell over 200 Jin of Jinzhen durians every day, and except for a small portion that isn’t ripe yet, the rest are basically sold out.”
Reports mentioned that by mid-May, some supermarkets and markets in Chengdu noted that tropical fruits like durians and mangosteens gradually entered the peak sales season, with prices significantly dropping.
At the Yimin Vegetable Market on Changshun Street in the Kuanzhai Alley area, durians were sold at 28 yuan per Jin. The staff indicated that in April, the price of durians in the store was around 36 yuan, representing a decrease of over 22% currently.
On online platforms, sales have also increased. A responsible person from JD.com mentioned that durian pre-sales began in April, with higher pre-sale prices, but in May, the selling prices decreased by about 30% compared to the previous month.
On Taobao platform, there are numerous sellers with total sales exceeding tens of thousands of orders, and many sellers with sales exceeding 100,000 orders.
Apart from seasonal factors, the increase in imports in recent years and efficient transportation methods have become important factors influencing the price changes of durians in domestic China. Taking Sichuan as an example, in 2024, the import of fresh durians in Sichuan increased by 145.8% compared to the previous year.
Industry insiders revealed that in June, a large quantity of durians from the eastern part of Thailand will enter the market and the circulation of durians is relatively complex. With rising temperatures, the storage period of durians is shortened. Wholesalers may further reduce prices to clear inventory.
