China entered the main flood season on July 1st. The Ministry of Water Resources predicts that from July to August, the country will face a situation of “floods in the north, droughts in the south.” Some northern regions may experience repeated heavy rains and flooding, with strong typhoons possibly hitting the northern areas. In contrast, temporary droughts may occur in the Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake water systems in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, as well as in the Qiantang River and Minjiang River.
According to a report by CCTV News, starting from July 1st, the main flood season has begun across China. During this period, northern regions will be prone to flooding. Major floods may occur in the Yellow River basin, the middle and lower reaches of the Huai River, the Yi, Su, and Si river systems, the Hai River basin, including the Zhangwei River, the Ziyaha River, the Daying River, the Yandding River, the Songliao River basin, the Liao River, Huntuai River, and the Jilin section of the Songhua River. Additionally, it is expected that 2 to 3 typhoons will make landfall, with a strong typhoon expected to move north and impact the northern regions.
At the same time, parts of the Yangtze River basin, including Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake water systems, the Qiantang River in Zhejiang, the Minjiang River in Fujian, and northern Xinjiang may experience temporary drought conditions.
Extreme weather events have been frequent this year, including strong winds, sandstorms, blizzards, heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and droughts. Many netizens have expressed their concerns, with comments like “Droughts are killing us, floods are drowning us!” “We thought the rainy season last year was long, but this year seems even longer. The Dandong area in Liaoning Province has seen double the number of rainy days compared to previous years.” “Even air conditioning can’t keep up with the heat under the subtropical high.” “High temperatures, typhoons, heavy rains – this year is really tough.”
