Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Strikes Yilan, Taiwan, Intense Shaking in Taipei

On April 9, 2025, at 9:53 am, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Taiwan, with a depth of 72.4 kilometers. The epicenter was located 15.5 kilometers south-southeast of the Yilan County Government, with the highest intensity recorded in Yilan and Hualien at level 4 on the seismic scale. Taipei experienced strong shaking during the quake.

This morning, a national-level alarm rang out across Taiwan, with the Taipei area notably feeling the tremors. The Central Weather Bureau pointed out that a significant earthquake had occurred in the northeast region, urging people to be cautious of strong shaking and reminding them to take cover nearby by “dropping, covering, and holding on.”

According to data from the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan, Yilan and Hualien recorded an intensity level of 4, while Taoyuan, New Taipei, Taichung, Nantou, Hsinchu County, and Changhua County recorded a level 3 intensity. Taipei City experienced a level 2 intensity.

Prior to this, the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan had issued an earthquake report, stating that on the evening of the 8th at 11:26 pm, a noticeable earthquake occurred in the eastern seas of Taiwan, measuring a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale with a depth of 15.3 kilometers. Hualien recorded a level 3 intensity, with 17 counties and cities across Taiwan feeling the tremors.
