On Thursday, May 29, British police charged a 53-year-old man with driving his car into the Liverpool Premier League champion parade procession, causing dozens of injuries.
Paul Doyle from the West Derby area of Liverpool faced seven charges, including dangerous driving and six counts of causing serious bodily harm to others.
He was arrested on Monday, the 26th, and is due to appear in Liverpool Magistrates’ Court for trial on Friday, the 30th.
The incident occurred on Monday in Water Street in Liverpool city center. Video footage showed a grey Ford Galaxy car plowing into dozens of people, tossing some into the air and trapping others under its wheels.
Authorities stated that the incident, which left 79 people injured, was an isolated one and not an act of terrorism.
Seven individuals remain hospitalized but are in stable condition.
Around a million people had gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s victory in the Premier League, with an open-top bus carrying team members parading through the city center, proudly displaying the trophy.
“I fully understand the shock and sadness that this incident has brought to all of us, and I know many will continue to have doubts and questions,” said Jenny Sims, Assistant Chief Constable of the Merseyside Police, while announcing the charges to the press.
“Our detectives are working tirelessly to find all the answers to these questions.”
