On the evening of July 11, 2025, after playing three rounds of Chinese chess with my younger brother Li Chunfu at his home, I left as it was getting late. I was driving back to my place when I encountered a traffic jam on the Jingyu Old Line, with flashing orange and red lights ahead – turned out it was a police checkpoint for drunk driving.
The main road of the Jingyu Old Line was blocked by police officers positioned on the south side, checking vehicles from west to east. About a dozen officers were stationed along the flow of traffic, spanning around 200 meters, quite a spectacle.
I slowed down and entered the testing area where a police officer in a yellow fluorescent vest approached me, holding a two-foot long bright red object resembling a “steel rod” and instructed me to blow into it for a breathalyzer test.
I blew into the device as requested, but the officer indicated it was not satisfactory and demanded a longer, more precise breath test. Feeling coerced and disrespected by the continuous demands, I insisted on seeing the authorization document for the checkpoint and the legal basis for the breath test they were conducting.
As a lawyer, I knew the procedures for setting up such checkpoints should be strictly regulated, and without proper authorization, blocking a main road is unlawful. The police duties include maintaining traffic order and should not impede the flow of vehicles, even during drunk driving checks.
Believing I had the right to request the required documents, I asked for the approval for the checkpoint and the legal basis for conducting the breath test. However, the encounter took a hostile turn with the officers becoming increasingly confrontational, attempting to force me out of the car.
Despite my efforts to resist, I was forcefully removed from my vehicle and taken to a police car parked in the middle of the road. Feeling alarmed, I called the emergency line 110 to report the police’s violent behavior and contacted the mayor’s hotline 12345 to address the illegal breath testing and their aggressive conduct.
Later on, more officers arrived, and I was subjected to additional breath tests with unusual methods, reflecting the escalating tension. I refused to comply with the demands that seemed arbitrary and potentially risky, considering the lack of transparency in the procedures followed by the police.
As the situation unfolded at the police station, I found myself being pressured into submitting to blood testing, which I vehemently rejected due to concerns about potential tampering or inaccurate results. The events that transpired were unsettling, leading me to question the integrity of the law enforcement practices being enforced.
Despite my insistence on my innocence and the lack of alcohol consumption, the officers continued to impose various forms of testing, raising doubts about their intentions and the validity of their actions. The ordeal highlighted the abuse of power and the absence of proper procedures in handling such cases.
The ongoing struggle against the unjust treatment inflicted upon me prompted me to challenge the authorities and demand accountability for their actions. The experience shed light on the flaws within the system, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in law enforcement practices.
To be continued…
