Lead content in some cheap phone cases in China exceeds the standard by 30 times.

Recently, media reports revealed that some cheap mobile phone cases sold on Chinese e-commerce platforms have lead content exceeding the standard by 30 times, long-term exposure to which may damage bones and lead to kidney failure.

According to reports from mainland China, there are many attractive and inexpensive “9.9 yuan (RMB) free shipping mobile phone cases” on Chinese e-commerce platforms, but many consumers have left comments in the review section saying that “the new case emits a strong plastic odor immediately upon opening.”

Recently, the Zhejiang Provincial Market Supervision Administration tested 20 mobile phone cases and found that the lead content in some low-priced cases exceeded the national standard limit by 30 times. Excessive lead content is not only harmful to human cells but may also damage bones and lead to kidney failure.

In addition, some cheap mobile phone cases contain excessive formaldehyde and benzene compounds, with pungent odors. Prolonged contact with these carcinogenic substances can lead to chronic poisoning.

Industry insiders revealed that the legitimate raw materials for mobile phone cases cost over ten thousand RMB per ton, but by mixing in waste plastic, the cost can be reduced by two-thirds. Some merchants may use recycled medical waste, electronic waste, etc., to produce mobile phone cases, which often contain various toxic substances.

Experts recommend that consumers prioritize purchasing mobile phone cases made of regular materials such as liquid silicone or TPU, and try to avoid buying “three no” products with flashy appearances and excessively low prices.

After the exposure of the issue of excessive lead in cheap mobile phone cases, it has sparked widespread concern among netizens about product safety. Some netizens said, “I can accept exceeding the standard at 9.9 yuan, but I’m afraid that I spend a few tens of yuan and it’s still over the standard.”

Some netizens also believe that the Chinese Communist Party regulatory authorities have neglected their duties, questioning why these toxic products that are “substandard” can be manufactured and sold.

Furthermore, CCTV, the official media of the Chinese Communist Party, recently revealed that many popular “pop pop music” toys among young people and children emit a pungent odor, and consumers have reported symptoms such as cracked palms and stinging eyes after use.

Testing agencies found that many “pop pop music” toys sold on e-commerce platforms contain toluene and formaldehyde, with levels significantly exceeding the standard. These toxic substances can cause severe damage to the respiratory and immune systems of the human body, particularly posing a greater risk to children who are in their growing and developing stages.

In addition, some “pop pop music” toys were found to contain phthalates exceeding national standards, which are commonly known as plasticizers. Phthalates have reproductive toxicity, and long-term exposure of children to such toxic toys may lead to early puberty or other risks.

In addition to these “pop pop music” toys, some children’s jelly shoes sold on the market also have issues of exceeding the standard with phthalates, affecting children’s growth.

A recent investigation by the Zero Waste Environmental Protection Public Welfare Development Center in Shenzhen, China found that about fifty percent of the children’s sandals best-selling on e-commerce platforms have problems with excessive phthalates, with the highest exceeding 509 times.
