Landlords can apply for sidewalk e-bike charging cabinets starting from April 7.

The New York City government is currently implementing a new measure that allows landlords to install outdoor electric bicycle battery charging cabinets on the sidewalks in front of their buildings. This initiative not only provides a safer charging option for residents and delivery workers, but also allows landlords to collect fees and explore additional sources of income.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) opened applications on Monday, April 7, allowing landlords to set up battery charging and swapping equipment on public sidewalks. This measure aims to reduce the fire risks associated with indoor lithium battery charging.

DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez stated that this move not only enhances the accessibility of safe charging infrastructure but also enables landlords to utilize public spaces to provide convenient services to the community.

Building owners or ground-floor businesses with 5 or more residential units are eligible to apply for installing these metal cabinets on the sidewalks in front of the buildings. Landlords can apply for a permit from the DOT by contacting [email protected].

Applicants are required to pay a $750 application fee upfront, and upon preliminary approval of their application, they must also submit a $3,000 security deposit and approximately $1,250 in additional fees. The overall application process is estimated to take about a year; once approved, the permit for the facility is valid for up to ten years without the need for annual renewal.

Currently, there is a collaboration between the city government and Swobbee, a company from Berlin, Germany, to establish charging cabinets on the sidewalks. Their pricing plan includes a maximum daily fee of $2, allowing for unlimited battery swaps.
