Kunming Commercial City Fire: Around 30 Shops Burned, Merchants Say

On May 7, a fire broke out at Kangsheng Commercial City in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, with thick smoke billowing from the scene. According to the shop owners, about 30 stores were burned in the blaze.

Numerous videos circulating online show the building with the sign “Kangsheng Commercial City” engulfed in thick smoke, with fire engines on site dealing with the situation.

Around 1:00 p.m. on the 7th, several shop owners at the commercial city informed Extreme Vision News that the fire started around ten in the morning in a two-story building within the commercial city. The area has been cordoned off, and firefighters have arrived at the scene, still actively fighting the fire.

“Suddenly, smoke started billowing out, so we rushed over,” one eyewitness told Vigorous News. “It started slowly, then within half a minute, it escalated rapidly.”

A shop owner at an electric car dealership within Kangsheng Commercial City told Great Wanxiang News, “We were inside the store when we smelled smoke and immediately ran out.” The adjacent second-floor shoe warehouse and multiple ground-floor shops were all damaged by the fire.

The shop owner of an auto repair shop in the area that caught fire also mentioned that their shop, with over one hundred square meters of space, had equipment, computers, and office supplies burnt in the fire, but thankfully no injuries were reported.

Several shop owners informed Hua Shang Bao and Dafeng News that the fire likely started in the warehouse on the second floor of a shop on the southern side of the commercial city, leading to damages in about 30 store fronts. However, there have been no reports of casualties so far.

At 1:30 p.m., personnel from the Guandu District Fire Rescue Team responded that firefighters are on-site working to control the situation, and further updates will be provided in due course.
