The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) reiterated the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait in the joint statement of the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers’ meeting. The ministry expressed its warm welcome and sincere gratitude to the support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the World Health Organization.
The G7 foreign ministers’ meeting took place in Capri, Italy from the 17th to the 19th, where the joint statement emphasized the essential nature of Taiwan Strait peace and stability for global security and prosperity. It called for the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues and endorsed Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations, including the World Health Assembly (WHA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The statement strongly condemned Iran’s recent attack on Israel and Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine. It reiterated the G7 members’ commitment to the free and open Indo-Pacific region under international law, expressing grave concern over the situations in the East China Sea and the South China Sea. The G7 opposes attempts to unilaterally change the status quo through force or coercion and condemns China’s repeated obstruction of freedom of navigation in international waters.
Since the G7 summit in Cornwall, UK in 2021, where leaders expressed their concern for Taiwan Strait peace and stability in the joint communique, members have consistently highlighted the interconnection between Taiwan’s security and global security and prosperity in their statements. As a crucial country in the Indo-Pacific region and a responsible international partner, Taiwan will continue strengthening cooperation with G7 members and like-minded countries to safeguard freedom and openness in the region, uphold the rules-based international order, enhance the resilience of the global democratic camp, and protect universal values like democracy, freedom, rule of law, and human rights.
In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Dutch House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a motion with 147 out of 150 members in favor, urging the Dutch government to rally support from other EU member states for Taiwan’s international participation. The ministry expressed sincere gratitude and warm welcome for this support.
The motion emphasized that Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations is legitimate and aligns with Dutch interests, urging the Dutch government to encourage other EU member states to support Taiwan’s participation in the WHO, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Interpol, and to publicly voice support for Taiwan’s participation in these organizations.
The bipartisan motion, proposed by members from various political parties, marks another concrete action of support for Taiwan by the Dutch Parliament following previous motions to enhance cybersecurity cooperation with Taiwan and prioritize Taiwan Strait peace last July. This support underscores the Dutch Parliament’s firm stance in support of Taiwan since the new parliamentary term commenced in November.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized Taiwan and the Netherlands’ shared values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and rule of law. Taiwan will continue collaborating with the Netherlands and like-minded countries to contribute to global health cooperation, well-being, and sustainable prosperity.
