Jiangxi Company Involved in “Mouse Head Duck Neck” Scandal Fined Another 3.48 Million Yuan

Last year, a canteen at a university in Jiangxi was involved in the “rat head duck neck” incident, with the company and three responsible individuals fined a total of 7.06 million yuan. Recently, the company and related responsibilities were fined another 3.48 million yuan. People have been leaving comments asking about the fate of the director who claimed “a rat was a duck.”

According to the mainland corporate information platform QiChaCha, the company involved in the “rat head duck neck” incident, Jiangxi Zhongkuai Logistics Service Co., Ltd., was fined 95,000 yuan by the Jiangxi Ji’an Market Supervision Administration for “operating unhygienic food” and had illegal gains of more than 29,000 yuan confiscated. The legal representative of the company, Mr. Zhu, was fined over 1.99 million yuan, equivalent to seven times his income from the unit in 2022; the individuals involved, Ms. Liu and Mr. Huang, were fined more than 1.04 million yuan and 345,000 yuan respectively, ten times their respective 2022 incomes from the unit.

On June 1st last year, students at Jiangxi Vocational and Technical College (referred to as “Jiangxi Vocational College”) found a rat head in their meal at the canteen, sparking outrage online. The involved university and the director of Changdong Branch of Nanchang High-tech Zone Market Supervision Administration, Jiang Xie Xue, claimed to the media that the dish was “duck neck” and not rat head. Netizens accused him of “mistaking a rat for a duck.” Under public pressure, authorities in Jiangxi finally established a joint investigation team and confirmed it was indeed a rat head.

In December of the same year, the canteen’s contractor, the company Jiangxi Zhongkuai Logistics Service Co., Ltd., was fined 100,000 yuan and had illegal gains of 1,325.5 yuan confiscated, while the three responsible individuals, Mr. Zhu, Ms. Tao, and Mr. Yi, were fined 10 times, 9 times, and 8 times their incomes from the previous year, totaling 7.06 million yuan.

The Communist Party Secretary and Principal of Jiangxi Vocational and Technical College involved in the incident resigned in November last year. However, Jiang Xie Xue, the director of Changdong Branch of Nanchang High-tech Zone Market Supervision Administration, has yet to face punishment.

Amid the recent fine on the involved company, mainland netizens are questioning the follow-up punishment for Jiang Xie Xue.

Mingyue: “I want to know what happened to that blind director?”

Helpless Effort: “Where did that director who couldn’t tell the difference between a duck and a rat go?”

Other netizens commented: “How are they handling that leader who lied with a clear conscience?” “The director who mistook a rat for a duck should be severely punished!” “The people involved are feeling ashamed and angry; there must be a thorough investigation! But what about that duck-neck director?” “What about the Market Management Bureau director? Weren’t you talking about duck necks? Huh?” “Where is that director who mistook a rat for a duck?” “It’s Jiang Xie Xue that netizens are truly concerned about!” “With low costs of breaking the law, impunity arises, it’s a pity.”
