Pop legend Jacky Cheung, 62, returned to Taipei after a six-year hiatus on May 31 to kick off the “Jacky Cheung 60+” world tour at the Taipei Arena with a total of 9 shows. The audience was ecstatic as he performed a series of hit songs and interacted with fans, expressing his gratitude by saying “it’s been too long.” While reminiscing about his fondness for Taiwanese fans, he suddenly showcased a split leg action and confidently said, “I can do it. I hope to come back sooner next time, no need to wait until I’m 70+.”
On the evening of May 31, the first show of the “Jacky Cheung 60+” world tour in Taipei commenced with the overwhelming screams of fans. It had been six years since Jacky Cheung last performed at the Taipei Arena. He began the night with high-energy pop songs, even dancing on a classic car on stage at one point. He later ascended to the upper stage to introduce his band members, showing incredible commitment through his singing and dancing. When he sang the iconic Cantonese song “Waiting Until It Hurts” during the show, the fans went wild with excitement, and a new music video remake featuring Cheung and Taiwanese actress Shu Qi was revealed on the big screen.
With warm greetings to his Taiwanese fans, Jacky Cheung fondly exclaimed, “Hello everyone! It’s been too long. My first visit to Taiwan was in 1986 when I released an album. Some friends of mine were here back then. From 1986 until now, this is the longest time I’ve been away from Taiwan, about six years. It’s been too long!”
Jacky Cheung’s concert in Taiwan featured an extensive lineup, including a 52-person orchestra and 20 dancers. He initially appeared on stage in a stylish cape and later changed into a leather jacket and pants costume. Reflecting on his 40-year career, he confessed that in his youth, he intentionally dyed his hair white to appear more mature. But now, he jokes, “I can’t wait to dye my hair black to look younger!”
Many fans expressed concerns about his health, to which he humorously responded on stage, “I’m still good, not much has changed. I can still fit into the jeans from over a decade ago. As I get older, there are many things I don’t want to part with, still keeping them around. My figure is still in good shape!” He assured the audience of his well-being and suddenly performed a split-legged move and quipped, “I used to do this before, and I can still do it now,” sending the crowd into a frenzy of excitement.
Finally, Jacky Cheung extended his best wishes for “the health of Taiwanese friends” and expressed, “I can do it. I hope to come back sooner next time, no need to wait until I’m 70+.”
