Jacky Cheung combines orchestra and ballet in a innovative way after a 6-year absence.

On May 31, 2024 – After a six-year hiatus, Hong Kong superstar Jacky Cheung returned to Taipei Arena on the 31st. It was the first performance in Taipei and also the 136th stop of the “Jacky Cheung 60+ World Tour.” The concert featured a three-sided stage design, blending Cheung’s vocals with orchestral music, pop tunes, and modern ballet to create a musical paradise tailored to his style.

The “Jacky Cheung 60+ World Tour” challenged Cheung to explore new forms of performance never tried before. The concert kicked off with captivating 3D visual effects of sea waves, ranging from calm to turbulent, setting the anticipation of the 10,000 strong audience at its peak. As sunlight broke through the clouds after the rain, Cheung appeared in a sunrise glow, dressed in a cloak and hat, serenading with “留住這時光” to start the show.

As the stage lights lit up and screens slowly unveiled, Cheung made a stylish entrance in a black leather outfit, instantly igniting the audience with screams. He performed “Ooh La La” on a moving platform, then transitioned to a retro car to sing “馬路英雄” with male and female dancers.

The stage shifted into two elevating platforms, raising Cheung to a four-story-high performance area where he delivered an energetic rendition of “情不勁”. With a series of three fast-paced songs, reorchestrated with orchestral music and ballet performances, Cheung presented a completely new audiovisual and performance experience compared to his previous concerts.

Returning in a blue velvet suit, Cheung sang emotional hits like “我應該” and “等你等到我心痛,” with video clips featuring moments alongside acclaimed actress Shu Qi, drawing cheers from the audience. Aside from his popular love ballads, Cheung also introduced two new songs, “日出時讓街燈安睡” and “又十年.” In “又十年,” the visual journey through Cheung’s youthful exuberance to weathered maturity touched fans, bringing tears to their eyes.

He then performed a lively Cantonese song “想劈酒,” less familiar to the live audience, but Cheung wrapped up the performance by teasing, “This song, I wrote it,” earning enthusiastic applause. Continuing with classics like “分手總要在雨天,” “祇想一生跟你走,” “一千個傷心的理由,” Cheung mesmerized the audience with the interplay of orchestral and percussion music, creating a spellbinding mix of beauty and grandeur.

During the encore, Cheung returned to sing “李香蘭,” “她來聽我的演唱會,” and led the audience in singing along to “一路上有你.” Cheung expressed gratitude, saying, “Because of your voices, this is the best version I’ve heard.” The concert concluded on a perfect note with “吻別.”

Cheung’s impressive memory was on display as he performed without a teleprompter, memorizing lyrics for over 20 songs and acknowledging each of the 52 members of the orchestra led by Music Director Ng Hing-lung, inviting the audience to show appreciation with applause. With 20 ballet dancers and Cheung himself, a total of 73 performers graced the stage throughout the night, creating a grand and remarkable spectacle.
